Bette Midler on Oprah#1
Posted: 1/29/08 at 12:33pm
Last night I turned on my tivo to find that Bette Midler and her daughter had been on Oprah. The daughter looks just like her and appears to be super intelligent and earthy. The snippets of Bette's Vegas show also looked wonderful ( even though a lot of what they showed was a mix of footage from the Kiss My Brass tour. Anyone else see it?

Thanks for the link. Since I don't watch Harpo.

Where's the part with her daughter?

Has Bette been freshly refreshed? Hard to tell. She doesn't look remotely 62, but is it the same job she had done for the TV series? I personally think the hair's too blonde -- that yellow hair/pink face look, made popular by Kelly Rippa, doesn't always work on someone d'un age certain. But Midler looks remarkably like she did 20 years ago.

Before her tv series? She even talked about it. It was subtle, but it was on the jawline. She didn't keep it a secret.

"The daughter looks just like her and appears to be super intelligent and earthy."

She wouldn't let her daughter watch tv so maybe that had something to do with it.

I'm sure Bette's work was very high quality and very very very tasteful.

J'adore that woman.

To be fair, it doesn't look like 'work,' and she's in primo physical condition. The legs are as perfect as ever.

Mostly, this is a real treat for Vegas. She's the single best live performer I've ever seen, and I've seen in in an array of venues, from the small theater in the round (missed the Baths; her standby was on the night I was there) to Radio City. Never disappoints.

Why is 'work' such an insult? I don't get it. Who cares???

Frankly, the second I can afford it, I'm getting my eyes did. Damn my Mediterranean heritage!

I so respect people who are forthcoming about their cosmetic surgery. Julie Christie was, too.

I also respect women who refuse to do it like Diane Keaton and Meryl Streep. But whatever you choose, just be honest about it!

Oh, and Bette Midler has always been and will always be fabulous.

I dunno, Robbie, how can we not care sometimes? I realize the gossip component is rather shallow. But on another level, we've seen so many celebrities lose their uniqueness, their identities; the very features that defined them disappear(Ms. Dunaway is one of the sadder examples).

Really? I thought she always wore those blue glasses because she wouldn't do it.

Actually, I've been thinking of getting me some of those blue glasses!

That I get. And I guess that's where the defensive posturing comes in. Since Star A has not gone overboard and lost all her uniqueness (and, more importantly, expresiveness) in her face, then TAKE THAT BACK SHE HAS NOT HAD WORK DONE!

I just don't get, though, the idea that we still have to defend someone's honor if they've indeed had work done. Or have THOUGHT about having work done. That's where the 'who cares??' comes in.

I think there's nothing wrong with freshening up. Or correcting minor issues. I agree that once a performer takes it to the level of lost expressiveness, it will hurt a career. But, in the end, who am I to really care. 'Cept for the fact that Cher can be a delicious actress, but not when her face can't move at all.

Take a look, Pen. I'm all for plastic surgery! And when you're in the "business" we call show, you almost have to do it.

Thanks, Cher was the Mt. Rushmore in this debate, the Exhibit A I was forgetting. When you watch her in MOONSTRUCK now, still a favorite, and then see the distortion -- the lost of self. Well, they don't need my vote; if it makes 'em happy. I agree that we all obsess on it too much. Probably just the sort of topic at a board like the that reveals a pitiful boredom on the poster's part. Or a need for distraction. Maybe what I need is to get my eyes done. I look increasingly like Glenda Jackson...

I noticed that some people do indeed lose all the character in their faces, and that's a shame. I think that's what happened to Faye Dunaway, among others.

Most of the soap stars retain their unique look, though.

I wonder if the difference is in the surgeons or each person's skin quality?

Some people want, as robbie put it, a "freshening up." Others want major changes, to "reconstruct" their faces. I think less is more. But it seemed to work pretty well for Phyllis Diller who's 90 now...but doesn't look a day over 70!

I don't know why I'm even commenting. I know next to nothing about cosmetic surgery except that if I ever do it, I'm going to someone REALLY good!

I finally got around to watching this. God, I love her. I need to go to Vegas ASAP. I'm so glad that she's going to be there for two years. That means I'll hopefully be able to see her more than once!
