I thought the movie was outstanding. I really loved all of the performances. Except 1. Anthony. To me, he ruined every scene he was in. People keep saying he had such a strong voice...I couldn't disagree more. I thought he was vocally one of the weak links. He had no chemistry with Johanna. He came off rather effeminate. (Add to the fact he was just kind of strange looking)
There really was nothing I liked about him. I keep reading people raving about him...I just don't understand.
I wasn't crazy about him either. I thought he was fine at best; though I felt his acting was not on par compared to the actors that he was on screen with. His voice, I thought, was actually pretty good.
Not at all. I thought he looked like a lesbian emo rocker with bad teeth, and he had one bewildered expression all the way through. Johanna should have stayed with Alan Rickman, who was far more attractive and sang better.
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."
I agree. He was definitely strange looking and his acting was off... Anthony is kind of crazy, but he took it to a new psychotic stalker level. It was creepy rather than romantic. I did like his voice though.
roquat, you aren't far off with you description! Did you see him at the screening in New York? The hair was all teased, interesting outfit and if I remember correctly, fingernail polish. I almost didn't recognize him. I have seen him interviewed and he is a bit effeminate. But I think he is pretty cute and I like what I have heard of his. I am seeing the movie tomorrow or Monday.
I thought he was good --- very constructive comment I know. I thought he had a pretty voice. And somehow he made me care about Johanna--- who really didn't do anything for me in the movie. I figured they were going for the Orlando Bloom type of hero (to compare to another Johnny Depp movie)... you know, young and non-threatening.
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
He was actually one of my favorite parts of the movie... his voice sounds like, i guess, your average british sailor just confident enough to sing through the streets of london... i mean they could have put Zac in this role... i'm grateful to have anyone who takes acting risks and doesn't depend on abdominals and baby blues...
I enjoyed his solos. He didn't have much of a sailor's edge to him but I felt he gave off that naive, too dumb to realize what he was getting himself into kind of look. It didn't bother me. He was attractive enough to warrant Johanna's attention.
I saw nothing in Rickman's appearance or behavior in this Movie to ever think Johanna would ever turn her attention to him. Surely she would have ended up as her Mother did in a year or two's time. Rickman was playing a cad and he had his part down well.
The Anthony/Johanna story line was just boring. I liked the movie though. I was very impressed with Carter, though her singing was horrible. If only she had the voice, I'd put her as a contender for an Oscar - if only.
I liked his performance. Yes he was rather young and feminine looking, but I thought he did a good job as the character. His voice I thought was outstanding, noly second to the outstanding vocal performance I thought of by the child who played Toby.
I thought that Anthony was kinda weak, but that was mainly because the relationship between Johanna and Anthony was so underdeveloped as compared to the stage show (and as such, both Johanna and Anthony were underdeveloped as characters). I thought his singing was wonderful, but I always thought the purpose of the whirlwind Johanna and Anthony relationship was to provide relief from the tension of the rest of the show, to show that people could be happy amidst all this drama and darkness of the rest of the plot. Burton transformed that somewhat, especially with that last scene where Anthony leaves Johanna in the barbershop for a bit, and she questions whether they can truly be happy after all they've been through. Seeing it for the second time today, I still thought it worked, but by eliminating a lot of the giddy happiness they felt, there isn't the emotional counterpoint and it takes a lot away from both characters.

I saw the movie yesterday afternoon. I think that his singing was great. And, I do think that the movie did an pretty good job with the subplot of him and Joannah. The subplot between them was weak.
I do feel that way about that story line in general.
It is similar in my mind to that of the story line of Cosette and Marius in Les Miserables or of the character of Raoul in Phantom.
Cosette and Marius are nice sweet and romantic. But, they really don't add anything to the story.
Raoul is considered th good guy but doesnt do much overall.
I think that Anthony and Johanna are similar to that. The only difference is that she is the daughter of Todd and living with the bad Turpin.
So, in other words they are nice and sweet but some what important to the plot.

Ehhh. I've never been a fan of Anthony as a character to begin with, but I agree, he lacked a certain chemistry with Johanna. Perhaps "Kiss Me" was in fact needed to give a little something extra to Anthony, and to give Johanna more than the five lines (and the ever-boring "Green Finch and Linnet Bird") she had in the film.
"I was very impressed with Carter, though her singing was horrible. If only she had the voice, I'd put her as a contender for an Oscar - if only. "
Well it is about Best Actress.... not best singer. She was outstanding, her voice was not horrible. It was light, but it worked so well with the Lovett she created and in Tim Burtons world.
