Best way to find an apt...#1
Posted: 12/11/07 at 10:40pm
I am moving to the city soon and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the best way to find a suitable apartment. I have...now I know it's a lot...four (maybe five) roommates and we are all moving together. We want to live in Manhattan in any place that will accomodate (or try to) five (maybe six) people living under one roof. I've researched lots of things, but I thought I would just give this board a try. Any input would be much appreciated.

And I apologize if this kind of thread gets old...

Wow. 5 or 6 people and you want to live in Manhattan?

Try an outer borough.

Try Stamford CT. It's 40 minutes outside the city and you won't pay out the nose for those kind of accommodations.

http://www.craigslist.org (how I found my first apartment)
http://www.citi-habitats.com (how I found my second apartment)
http://www.corcoran.com (how I found my third apartment)

Other sites:
http://www.halstead.com
http://www.fenwick-keats.com
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/realestate/index.html

On a lot of these sites, you can do a search for apartments with a specific number of bedrooms, and select the price range you are willing to pay.

Okay, I'll divulge my little secret. Look at 181 St. area/Riverside Drive. Affordable (relatively speaking) nice larger apts., 1 block up to the A train (20 minutes to midtown), good shops, great view of the River and the Bridge If you can score an apt. ON Riverside Dr). Seek a good, legit agent. You need a good credit report and job refs, too.
The GOOD part of Washington Heights. Riverdale's nice, too, but more of a trek downtown.
Good Luck! Be wary of Craigslist (alot of scammers), and other phony apt. seeking "services".

Why is it that when someone posts a thread seeking information on finding an apartment in Manhattan, people immediately respond as though the original poster has budgetary concerns that make it so s/he in fact cannot afford Manhattan?

The original poster didn't say a word about not being able to afford Manhattan, and my guess is that he and his roommates have an idea of how much the average Manhattan apartment costs.

There are average priced five and six bedroom apartments available for rent all over Manhattan. You don't need to move to Connecticut nor do you have to limit yourself to one specific neighborhood.

Take your time searching and researching.
