Personally I would love to see this happen (even though I don't think it will ever actually happen). And not to jump on the Sweeney bandwagon, but I believe Burton would do an excellent job with the piece. Yes, it would probably be a darker and more whimsical production than most would imagine for this piece, but the best productions I've seen of the show have been darker and more twisted than the "traditional" productions. As far as casting goes, I can see any number of combinations working. The main thing for this piece is that the actors have the vocal and acting abilities to do the roles justice. Stunt casting just to draw more people into the theatres would probably happen, which would most likely result in an absolute abomination of a film.
Haven't there been serious talks (and perhaps even somewhat concrete casting) for this project before? I know this idea has already been posted, but I remember hearing talk of Cher being cast as the witch a few years ago? Seems like I had even heard Gloria Estefan mentioned for the role...
Anyway, My "dream" cast:
Witch: Bernadette Baker: Me :) Baker's wife: a fellow poster (she knows who she is) Cinderella: Tammy Blanchard Narrator/ Mysterious man: George Hearn Stepmother: Patti LuPone (even though she probably wouldn't take such a small role) Wolf: Johnny Depp (would never happen, but I think it would be brilliant! Completely agree with whoever posted that originally) Little Red: an ambitious newcomer The Princes: Jared Leto and T.R. Knight (no idea why, it just works in my mind) Cinderella's mother/ Giantess: Phylicia Rashaad Jack: anyone but Zac Efron
The Witch - Catherine Zeta-Jones or Nicole Kidman Baker's Wife - Toni Collette (if they want to go younger then maybe Ann Hathaway or Amy Adams) Baker - Ewan MacGregor or Jake Gyllenthaal Cinderella - Ann Hathaway (or Amy Adams) Cinderella's Stepmother - Bernadette Peters Cinderella's Father - George Hearn The Two Princes - Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenthaal, James Marsden Red Riding Hood's Grandmother - Angela Lansbury Jack - Zac Efron Jack's Mother - Bette Midler Rapunzel - Amy Adams Stepsisters: Lisa Kudrow & Mira Sorvino Giant's Wife - Kathy Bates Little Red Riding Hood - Abigail Breslin

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
I think that if Tim Burton was going to do another musical Little Shop would be more his style. i really want to see a remake of little shop but i don't think Johnny as Seymour, helena as Audrey, and alan rickman as mushnic would do it for me.
Witch: Catherine Zeta Jones Bakers Wife: Toni Collete Baker: Bill Pullman Little Red: Amy Adams Jack: Jamie Bell Cinderella: Anne Hathaway Rapunzel: Emmmy Rossum Cinderella's Prince: Johnny Depp Rapunzel's Prince: James Marsden Jack's Mother: Helena Bonham Carter Stepmother: Maryl Streep Florinda: Hillary Duff Lucinda: Lindsay Lohan Cinderella's Grandmother: Angela Lansburry Narrator/Mysterious Man: no clue
Hmmmm. I don't know. I just don't particularly see this working as a movie. Of course, that's what I thought about Hairspray and, boy was I wrong! I have no problem with Tim Burton doing this. Originally, I was gonna write this huge spiel about Tim Burton directing it that basically went nowhere. Long story short, I just don't see the movie itself translating to the screen very well. I could be wrong.
