Here are some pictures from Frank Galati's show, after the quake, at the La Jolla Playhouse. It is adapted from Haruki Murakami's book of short stories after the quake. The two short stories it is based of are Honey Pies and Super Frog saves Tokyo It was done twice before once at Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and once at Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven.
It is really a beautiful show and a gorgeous production. I HIGHLY encourage anybody who has the chance to see it to go and see it. BWW's pictures from the show
The whole book is about the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Kobe, Japan in 1995. Frank Galati (who wrote the adaptation) weaved together the two stories so that they switch back and forth. I don't want to give it away but one of the stories is about a Frog that comes and visits an ordinary man and tells him that he needs to save Tokyo from an earthquake. The second story is about a little girl who wakes up in the middle of the night because of the 'Earthquake Man' and it tells the story of her and her family.
He is actually a pretty firm guy, he is just really nice.
Edit: The director does not have the power to insist that all of the material be re-written. The only person who really has that power is the producer.
I've read the original book, but I don't remember about the little girl's dream about Earthquake man. The frog story was pretty good. I wish they'd extend it even for a week then I may be able to see it.
