I tried to go on one of the High School Musical threads to find the answer but they scare me. Can someone answer this? I love his singing in Hairspray and can't imagine why they'd dub him.

Yes. His voice is dubbed in the first HIgh School Musical movie. Drew Seeley did his singing. Zac will be doing his own singing in High School Musical 2.

They dubbed him at parts--apparently he's a baritone and Troy is a tenor, or something.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

Troy is a tenor.

Here's an excerpt from a recent article about it:

I asked Zac Efron about his singing in the movies. He acknowledged that Drew Seeley, a Lake Brantley High grad, was warbling in the first film.

"I have a unique-sounding voice," Efron said Saturday. "Drew is much more of a singer. He's trained. He's a professional singer. He's very talented. I consider myself a regular kid that can carry a tune. It's not something I set out to do. I've been able to sing, but I don't want an album."

As for "High School Musical 2," which premieres Aug. 17 on Disney Channel, Efron said he is handling the singing entirely.

"That was a very huge point for me in this movie," Efron said. "I had to put my foot down and fight to get my voice on these tracks."

So what happened on the first movie? Efron said that after everything was recorded, his voice was not on the tracks.

"I was not really given an explanation," he said. "It just kind of happened that way. Unfortunately, it put me in an awkward position. It's not something I expected to be addressed. Then 'High School Musical' blew up."

And he became one of the hottest stars in popular culture.

"I'm very fortunate that Drew has gotten proper credit and also that I've got the opportunity to come back and try it again with my own voice," Efron said.

And he sings in the new movie "Hairspray" as well.

What I've heard most is that his vocal range is lower than the rest of the cast of HSM so they just dubbed over him to make it easier to mix the songs. It's important to remember that when HSM was being made, nobody expected that it would blow up like it did, so I doubt they ever thought they'd have to explain this.

If you acquire the HSM soundtrack, it's quite funny listening to the songs 'Start Of Something New' and 'Breaking Free', because onscreen they're duets between Troy and Gabriella, but when you're listening to them and don't have any faces with flapping lips to match the sounds to, they suddenly become slightly creepy-sounding trios. Zac opens, then Seeley takes over, and it's like "buh? Gabriella has *two* mens? :O".

Makes me chuckle, anyway. :3 (I actually prefer Zac's sound to Seeley's; the latter sounds far too smooth and bland and generic for my liking. Love it or hate it, you can't really deny Zac's voice is distinctive.)

Zac's singing was dubbed. One wishes his acting was dubbed as well.

I'm a self-proclaimed Zac Effron hater. I'm not sure why, but he bugs me. But he won me over in Hairspray. I wouldn't go as far to say that his singing was "good" but it wasn't that bad. His voice did sound bad on "Ladie's Choice" or whatever it's called. It didn't sound good probably because his voice is just too low for the character. But I thought he acted the role pretty well. I mean it's not shakespeare, and he got a few laughs, nothing bad. But he seems really tall and lanky and when standing side by side with some of the other cast memebers, he just seemed awkward.

It's EFRON, not EFFRON.
