Having a heated discussion with a friend who doesn't think there are any hot moments in musicals so I was just wondering what folks found to be the most erotic or sensual moment in a musical. High on my list is Dangerous Game a la Linda Eder.

Other examples?

"friend who doesn't think there are any hot moments in musicals..."

Is your friend under a rock? Sex, eroticism, and sensuality have graced the Broadway stage for a while now! Hello, Spring Awakening!

I don't understand. Regarding what your friend thinks - is he arguing his opinion that these certain moments aren't hot enough, or does he actually think shows don't have this stuff in them?

Chicago is quite erotic. A lot of musicals have sensual moments. Even Curtains has a little bit of a racy dance (Bambi's Native American dance)

I'm thinking about shows that I've seen, and I can't think of any truly erotic moments. I've seen sexy people, sexy costumes, sexy dancing. But nothing I'd describe as erotic. Apparently I am not seeing the right shows, lol.

Cabaret anyone?

Bobby's scene with April in Company, too.

A CALL FROM THE VATICAN from Nine.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

I agree with misschung on Company. Raul caressing the tuba is pretty sensual.

The "Point of No Return" scene in Phantom of the Opera. Depending on who's performing, it can be really steamy.

take your friend to go see spring awakening, then come back and tell us you've never seen eroticism on a Broadway stage.

No Erotic moments in musical? Go and see Cabaret at Londons Lyric Theatre...Spanking, S & M, Boys kissing, Girl's Kissing, Full Frontal nudity, sex acts ... its about as erotic as theatre gets without actually having sex.

Going with genuinely erotic as opposed to outwardly sexual, I'd say...

With the right cast, 'As Long As You're Mine' from 'Wicked', and maybe 'Say It Somehow' from 'The Light In The Piazza'. Any of those songs which some people (ie - me) could interpret as being a polite representation of the characters having sex. As with many things, having something implied onstage is SO much more erotic than having something explicitly shown. Again, with the right cast, I'm sure 'Phantom Of The Opera' could have its moments.

Personally, that moment near the beginning of 'One Day More' in 'Les Mis' when Enjolras runs on wearing that f***ing sexy costume. Does it for me every time! And yes, Raúl caressing a tuba is quite the fist-biting moment for me as well. But then, I'm odd. ^_^ Ohhh, and that bit in 'Shall We Dance?' from 'The King And I' where the King reckons they're not dancing properly and then the key change... GUH! If you don't already have the new Broadway cast recording, you should get it. I swear, you can HEAR the sexual chemistry oozing from the speakers at that point.

If you'll excuse me, I think it's time for a shower. ^_^

Actually, before I go...

I know this is a thread about musicals, but I saw the Donmar production of 'Kiss Of The Spider Woman' (straight play version) twice recently and found both times a profoundly arousing experience. I have never been so turned on by theatre before and I wish I could have seen the production many more times.

And I'm pretty certain it's not *just* because I fancy the pants off Rupert Evans, 'cos I rather *enjoyed* the novel as well.

You're all judging me right now, aren't you? I can tell. re: Most erotic moment?

That is probably one of my favorite romantic moments in musical theater.

misschung-totally agree about the King and I moment.
Even in the film-watch how they breathe differently and look into each others' eyes.

Erotic doesn't have to be nudity-romantic chemistry could replace the term.

I think "Point of No Return" is erotic, (the words certainly are) as is "People Will Say We're In Love" from "Oklahoma!" if done correctly.

Judge Turpin's self flagelation scene in Sweeney Todd (now often cut out or restaged).

I also agree about that one King & I moment. You can hear it in their voices.

Perhaps it was not a dream.

Exactly. "So in Love " and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" always get me too - those are more love songs rather than erotic moments, but still. I'm old school re: Most erotic moment?

Ya, just doesn't think there are any...or many...moments. Some of the ones mentioned are more "romantic" is the argument...which can go hand in hand, but not in this case apparently ;P

I almost died when I saw Aaron Lazar as Enjolras in that moment.

One of the most erotic moments for me in Les Mis is when Marius and Enjolras first enter during "Look Down". I wasn't really crazy about Adam Jacob's Marius, but the sight of him and Aaron Lazar together on that bridge... whoa...

Dangerous Game is definitely pretty sexy. In my production, the ensemble did silouttes in the background. The cast was pretty raunchy and the director made a mistake of giving the cast a free reign on what types of scenes to create. Eventually, we toned it down so the older crowd wouldn't be offended, but it was still pretty hot.

I used to "Do You Love Me?" was full of adorable moments, but then I saw Fiddler with Rosie and Harvey. The sets had more onstage chemistry than they did.

Cosette: Roses are red. Marius: Violets are blue. Eponine: You're so in love! Marius: And so not with you.

I love "If Ever Would I Leave You" from "Camelot"
I also think that "It's Too Darn Hot" is really 'hot' if staged correctly
R & H really had a gift for producing scenes with this 'romantic chemistry': "Some Enchanted Evening" from "South Pacific" sticks out, as does "Younger Than Springtime" and "We Kiss in a Shadow" from "The King and I". Though it's not in the stage version, the song "Something Good" from "The Sound of Music" and even the scene where they dance together.
I also think "If I Loved You" has this feature.
Other modern examples: I agree with "As Long as You're Mine" and I know I'll be executed for saying this, but "A Dangerous Game" from "Jekyll and Hyde" oozes with sensuality, as does "Alive". (the orchestrations in "Alive" really do it.)
Also-"Only Love" from "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (cut from later version.)

"A birdcage I plan to hang. I'll get to that someday. A birdcage for a bird who flew away...Around the world." "Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.

"Say It Somehow" from LitP all the way!

Also agree with Princeton.

And, can't believe anyone hasn't said this yet: Passion! The whole show, really, is very sensual. My favorite moment though is the end of "No One Has Ever Loved Me" when the orchestra swells... oh man.

Speaking of orchestras swelling, also the ending of "All the Wasted Time."
