What are some shows that have german cast recordings or some german shows? I just started a German I class, and am thinking this knowledge will proably come in handy for later projects. I am interested in all I can find, but also ones that are availible on iTunes and cheap on amazon, but again, I am looking for all I can find.

Thanks in advance!

I have several names, one is Julian2. I am also The Opps Girl. But cross me, and I become Bitch Dooku!

I did the same thing when I studied German.

Sunset Boulevard with Helen Schneider

Little Shop of Horrors

Three Penny Opera

ETA: Ute Lemper's "Berlin Cabaret Songs". This has been released in both German and English, so make sure to buy the German one.

I know Phantom of the Opera has one (Das Phantom Der Oper), as well as A Chorus Line. I'm pretty sure My Fair Lady does too.

I've got the complete recording of the 1999 German touring cast for RENT, including the textbuch and fotobuch.

I've also got a German version of 1993 version of "Highlights, Die faszinierende Welt des Musicals" with the following:

-- Die Musik der Nacht (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA)
-- Erinnerung (CATS)
-- Starlight Express (STARLIGHT EXPRESS)
-- Ich gehor nur mir (ELISABETH)
-- Ich bereu es nie (A CHORUS LINE)
-- Nur fur mich (LES MISERABLES)
-- Im Grunen irgendwo (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS)
-- Ich bin was ich bin (LA CAGE AUX FOLLES)
-- Mehr will ich nich von Dir (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA)
-- Der Regen (Eponines Tod) (LES MISERABLES)
-- Spitz und rund (Tanz: zehn, Typ: drei) (A CHORUS LINE)
-- Jetzt hast du Seymour (LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS)
-- Du aillein (STARLIGHT EXPRESS)
-- Die Schatten werden langer (ELISABETH)

Send me a PM if you want more details.

Der Glockner von Notre Dame aka The Hunchback of Notre Dame (of the Disney variety) um....this cd pretty much rocks. Drew Sarich sounds amazing as Quasimodo. This show NEEDS to come to Bway...now!!!

there are also some great German cast recordings of:

The Beautiful Game
The Lion King
Jekyll and Hyde
Miss Saigon
Aida

you can also try the Austrian recording of Beauty and the Beast.

you just can't miss out on the original German musicals by Kunze and Levay though. the unmissables being Elisabeth, Mozart and Rebecca. they are simply... divine. you'll find lots of recordings are available of Elisabeth, but I'm sure many will tell you that the Essen production recording is the best to introduce you to the show with Pia Doures and Uwe Kroger. again... divine.

take a gander at The 3 Musketiers. worth it enough for Pia and Uwe alone.

my last reccomendation for the evening is Tanz Der Vampire. this one also being quite unmissable.

I'm not a huge fan of the German Miss Saigon, but it's worth a listen. Uwe Kröger is just too restrained and careful for my tastes (I wouldn't believe him as a strung-out GI), and Aura Deva's vibrato is something else. But it's not bad.

I like the German Phantom cast, though! I haven't listened to it in a long time, but they're more operatic than most American casts, so it's a bit of a change.

Les Miserables has two - Duisburg and Vienna. There are a few variations in the translations. The Vienna is better, lyrically.

Really! I haven't heard the Duisburg one (so I can't comment on the cast), but a German friend of mine from years ago worked backstage in Duisburg and said the Vienna lyrics were atrocious, and the revisions for Duisburg were a huge improvement.

I don't know German, but your post is the first time I've heard anyone saying Vienna lyrics were better!

Your going to laugh, but Wildhorn's Dracula is a huge hit there. If I remember correctly the German Cast Recording made of the show was high on the German music charts recently.

Lizzie - the Duisburg has a much better cast.

I haven't listened to it in a while, nor do I have the lyrics. I do have the lyrics to the Vienna.

Both German versions are extremely similar, though, and both have pretty atrocious lyrics. I just checked, the Vienna came out first. So now I am thinking Duisburg has the better revisions. I'll check again, sometime.

MrBundles - are you sure that it's German? because last i knew, there was an Italian and Dutch recording, but no German. Amazon and soundofmusic.de don't even list it either.

The german cast recording of RENT is out-of-print.

I would recommend to have a look at http://www.soundofmusic-shop.de/ where you can find every german recording which is available.

Elisabeth, Mozart and Rebecca are great german musicals.

Greetings from Germany

I have never heard Phantom of the Opera, yet this thread has randomly convinced me that my first time hearing it should be in German.

There is also a German recording of 8 tracks from Company (with German text by Michael Kunze)sung by members of the production in Munich in 2001.

The album aslo has bonus tracks in English of other Sondheim songs (Move On, Not A Day Goes By, The Miller's Son & Could I Leave You?).

"Titanic: Das Musical" is good even though it cut alot of the incidental spoken lines that are on the OBCR which for some reason I found annoying.

"Elizabeth" is pretty nice as well.

There is a German Cast Recording of "Annie Get Your Gun" on amazon.de which I am really tempted to get (since I seriously own about a dozen different versions of that show - it isn't my favorite show - heck no - but it is the one I sort of made a habit of collecting every version available).

I should add that there are two German cast recordings of Phantom of the Opera, as well as one German version of the movie soundtrack. The Vienna Cast recording is a complete recording, and has very interesting orchestrations. But I believe it is out of print. The Hamburg recording is newer, and only a highlights recording.

The Viennese Phantom double album is still available from soundofmusic.de

I just debating whether to get Rebecca - I love Elisabeth, but was rather diappointed by Mozart...

I have the German recordings of RENT, Chicago, Mamma Mia, Cats, The Lion King, Sunset Boulevard and Aida.

The Aida German cast is phenomenal. Well-produced and has a high-belting Amneris that blew my socks off. You were able to get it on iTunes for a while...

Chicago is a pretty solid recording if not all that interesting...I like Anna Montanaro's Velma.

Cats, The Lion King, and Mamma Mia are all generally good...just a basic representation of the show.

The German RENT is, I believe, the most complete recording of the show. A very solid production with a strong voiced set of leads. This is one of the best international recordings...if you can find it...I would try to nab it.
