A few months ago, a local playhouse advertised for auditions in a production of Aida "no experience necessary".

When there are teenage fangrils behind you claiming that the theatre is putting on a production of Wicked next year.

You know it's community theater when rehearsal comes to a screeching halt because someone brought in coffee and doughnuts!

I don't know if this has been posted on here, and I know this is a thread to poke fun at community theaters, however this theater group needs your prayers. This was on the news a while back. 3 members of this theater were shot and killed. Please send your support!

...you do a production of thoroughly modern mille that has set changes that last up to 10 minutes so during each one, a cast or crew member performs a song from the 20's..the show ends up being 3.5 hours long

You know it's community theatre when you discover that the last project the sound crew worked on was the 2009 Tony Awards telecast. re: You Know It's Community Theatre When...

The take out all the profanity from WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?

(Really, "Date the hostess" isn't nearly as effective as "Hump the Hostess")

...When the actor who plays Jimmy Smith, who is otherwise very talented and age-appropriate, happens to be about 10 inches shorter than Millie Dillmount.

...When the very gay young man playing the older Patrick in Mame sings, "The debs all go for me." You just can't help but snicker.

...When the young woman who sings "Dance 10 Looks 3" doesn't really have, ahem...you know.

You know you're in community theater when you go home knowing that someone in that audience was tranported from his very lonely world for 2 or 3 hours and he can't wait until your next show, even if it is the hundredth time seeing Guys and Dolls or The Music Man. It's all good.

...when the same damn actors are cast year after year in the leads
...every performance is not an original one; it's simply an imitation of Ethel Merman or Mary Martin.

Broadwayguy2: "they use 'Happy Birthday' as an audition song". That's how Jill Haworth auditioned and got the Sally Bowles role in the OBC of "Cabaret"

PS. DG - I was in agreement with you on the thread initally, but it seems actually more affectionate than mean spirited.

you're totally and unexpectedly blown away by the show and afterwards are trying to figure out why you felt that way and realize it's just the ineffable chemistry of theater where sometimes everything just works, even with nonprofessionals with zero budget.

The part of the Narrator in Joseph is split into three parts to create more roles.

you see a production of Hairspray and Tracy is skinny, Edna is played by a woman, most of the black characters are played by white people, there is no big hair and character names are pronounced wrong- I’ve actually witnessed this.
