forget seeing a long-running show cuz it's great. NO ONE does it like the original cast. replacements just don't have any talent worthy of seeing.

.... huh. Well, uhm... I guess there's some... OKAY information in there? It's nice to see someone pushing tourists to try stuff outside of the usual theater faire by reminding them that there are always national tours, but a lot of this "saged advice" is just skewed. Sounds like the author wants to sound all NYC-savvy and chic, but she just comes off as yet another woefully misinformed out-of-towner.
[EDIT: 'no one' does is like the original cast? Isn't that a good thing? It's called variety. ]

So let me tell you what I want to tell my friend when he's planning a Broadway visit. Maybe you'll wise up and make better use of it than he does.
WOW what an assumption?! So this guy (is it a guy?) is assuming that everyone else is the same as his/her friend???
Talk about someone being full of themselves??!!! It's no wonder I strongly dislike critics --- ASSUMING --- all critics are the same as this one, of course.

I never get all these tourists that come in and see phantom of the opera and mamma mia when both have been touring for years and have made many MANY stops in most major cities. Why not see something that's special to New York. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Posted: 5/14/06 at 2:25pmWell, one time i went to NYC with a dear friend of mine who claims is into Bway, and he went to see "Mamma Mia" and "Altar Boyz" and he says he would see "Mamma Mia" many more times, and he has seen it already about 8 times, but he hasn't seen many shows that play(maybe just a few long-runners) on Bway and i wanted him to come to the final performance of "The Woman in White" and he had zero interest, and it pissed me off because "Mamma Mia" is now in FL and he is seeing it this week and when can you see WIW? That same week i saw "Pajama Game", "Rabbit Hole", "Fanny Hill" and "Barefoot in the Park" what's the point of seeing "Mamma Mia" or "Wicked" or shows that come to FL once a year? I don't think it's about the original leads being better than the replacements, but that in general a show gets tired...I don't think Phantom of the Opera has the same spark as they did when they came out, and that's not because the replacements aren't good...and generally, that's the case with most shows that have been running for a long time.
And in any case, I like that he encourages tourists to see things like Grey Gardens or other things that won't go around the country. That's the sort of advice I give my friends who come into the city.

that might be the case with some shows, but there are others that DEFINITELY still have it going. see Hairspray lately? that show is still in top shape with so much energy. it's why i love it so much and go on and on about it!
plus thats the show i had in mind when i was thinking about some replacements who i think are better than originals :-P

Posted: 5/14/06 at 2:44pmWell, for example, i thought Carly Jibson was a lot better vocally than Marissa from Hairspray, so i disagree with replacements being worse than the original performers, that is non sense. A replacement can be better or worse. But "Hairspray" is a show that tours all the time and the touring production is as good as the tour i think. Plus we all know that this show will run for years and years, i'd rather go to see other shows that won't have a long run like Hairspray.

Posted: 5/14/06 at 3:50pmmy coment was in response to pinguin about shows geting tired... i didn't say anything about the tour, which i agree was just as great. but if i hear about how great a replacement is in the Broadway production, i'm going to do my best to get there for it. for example, sticking with Hairspray, Leah Hocking and Diana Degarmo... everything i heard about them was true. they're amazing. i just saw the tour when it was here last november, but i still wanted to see them in the roles. so oftentimes it can depend on who is in it that decides if you're going to see a show again.
