imaging Sondheim wrote the score for Wicked.... now that would be interesting... and it would have probably stayed more true to the darker elements of the book.
Also... what about Little Shop?

I like Charlie Brown's hands...
"It's like I'm being tied to the hood of a yellow rental truck, being packed in with fertilizer and fuel oil, pushed over a cliff by a suicidal Mickey Mouse."
I've always wondered what his music for "Gypsy" would have been like had Merman let him do it. Well, one thing's for sure, Herb would've sung a bit more.
Roxy, the Merman joke made me laugh out loud! Good job!
What if you kept the original team for CHICAGO, but Sondheim wrote it? I know he would probably have had Bennit choreograph, but could you imagin Fosse choreographing a Sondheim show?
"I've always secretly longed for an actress to get to the top of the cherry picker and projectile vomit all over the guards below."- Wonderwaiter in the "Defy Gravity?" thread.
~~~~~~~~My dream? Sutton Foster as Cassie in A Chorus Line
No offense to Sondheim, b/c I love him. He's an amazing writer. But if he had written these shows like Little Shop and Phantom and Wicked, musical theatre and Broadway would be a lot less popular. Sondheim shows are notorious for not being very big hits or very "mainstream," however brilliant they are. I think it's very valuable that the people who did write those shows actually did.
But if Sondheim did his own SEPARATE adaptations of those shows, I would love it. I wouldn't take away the original authors or shows, but if he just decided he wanted to do another adaptation like Yeston did with Phantom, I'm all for it. What if he had written Carrie? At least then we would know that it would be recorded.
Sondheim is a gifted composer but, like Woody Allen , has gone from whimsical fare ( Funny Thing, Waltz, Whistle ) to very dark pieces like Follies Into The Woods etc. Can he go back ? He tried in Bounce & although it did not make it I like the Score & think he can
If he did nothing but Follies, he would be remembered. People like Jerry Herman & Kander/Ebb were very versatile . Hopefully Sondheims next venture will be a little piece of fluff
