You could rejoice in the fact that despite the failure of the film the NY stage production has experienced a rise in the boxoffice on the heels of the films advertising campaign. Wether it can sustain it after the holidays is a different story.

again, look at all the other drops in the other movies in the top 10...It is not fair to call RENT a 'failure' just yet.

Um, it's not about the "drops", it's about the total box office take. And RENT isn't making money and it won't recoup. That's called a FLOP. On the positive side, it has been getting disastrous across-the-board reviews too. Next.

um, last I heard, taking in over 4 million dollars IS still making money, but okay.

And do your research with reviews: They are split directly down the middle, with the postive reviews being GLOWING RAVES and the negative ones being scathing. Mixed, but hardly "disasterous."

I saw it three times, and one is when I took 24 students from my afterschool program. I suppose our little trip didn't help.

I expect at least a golden globe nod at the least, aside from that I expect the smaller, more specified awards, like the Black Film awards, to give a nod to Jesse or something. The reviews aren't a disaster, it's really polarized actually

Not talking reviews. talking money. talking the biz part of show. The movie is a flop.

The movie is not a flop... a flop would be something that doesn't even make it two weeks, something like Gigli... It made money and was at #5 and now #6... since when is that considered a flop? Maybe it didn't do as well as expected but it isn't a flop. I can't stand such pessimism...

One of the weekend entertainment shows introduced a RENT segment saying there was Oscar buzz. They immediately cut to Wilson Jermaine-Herredia.

I predict Golden Globe nods for Wilson, Rosario, and Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

I mean, hell, if Phantom (which I found to be all style and absolutely NO substance) garnered quite a few GG nods, why cant RENT?

Aeon Flux is a flop, because it is an action hero film (usually big box office draws) with no competing new film and has an Oscar-winning starring actress wearing really skimpy clothing. A movie such as this is clearly just crying out for box office tickets rather than any critical acclaim or recognition.

Rent, on the other hand, a) is a musical, b) stars a cast full of Hollywood/movie unknowns except for a starlet who hasn't had real big break, and c) talks about AIDS, poverty, gays, and other less popular subjects. Moreover, as I mentioned before, Rent seems to do better than the other movies on weekdays for some strange reason. What we are looking at right now are only weekend rankings.

Most of the more artsy type of movies rarely are big box office draws. What matters with those films is not simply the money they earn, but also the buzz they can create and the good reviews they get. The buzz is being created, as can be seen by the box office rise for the stage production. Rent got a "B" in Yahoo Movies. That is NOT (hell no!) disastrous. An average movie on Yahoo is listed with "C". To compare, even A Beautiful Mind got only a "B+". The reviews are simply polarized.

It's all relative and there's a difference. Rent has not been a hit so far, but it's certainly not a flop by any means. I really wonder where those who claim to be math and business experts come from with these conclusions.

I think once "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe" opens next week, we are going to see a another huge percentage drop for all currently running movies.

I still keep seeing those "Rent" commercials which give no indication that it's a musical. It's almost as though the studios think that that might discourage the general public from seeing it.

I have a feeling this is somewhat of the way the box office will go this coming weekend.

1) The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe
2) Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire
3) Walk the Line
4) Yours, Mine, and Ours
5) Pride and Prejudice
6) Rent
7) Just Friends
re: Rent Drops 54 Percent in 2nd Week Chicken Little
9) In the Mix
10) Derailed

You don't think Aeon Flux will even make the top ten????

It was #2 this weekend. I doubt it'd drop out of the top 10. Sadly, Aeon Flux has more appeal than Rent.

I deplore The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardbrobe, and personally think that film looks overblown and crappy. But the Christians will probably flock to it.

rent may be a box office flop but not a financial flop yet. until final box office, merchandise, soundtrack sales, and dvd sales are totaled, an official "flop" title cannot be given. the term flop is for those that dont make their money back. it might not do that with just the box office ( which thus gives it the title of a box office flop) but i have no doubt that with the other factors it will make the production and advertising money back, no problem.

I can't speak for Christians, but I'll see it for the special effects.
