Anyone have particularly handy ways of getting recordings from musicals (originally in English) done in other languages? In particular I'm looking for: Cabaret, West Side Story, and My Fair Lady (and any other translations besides Les Mis and JC Superstar) in Czech and Rent in Italian.

gracias :)

Most of my other-than-English recordings I've gotten from eBay auctions. Amazon UK and Dress Circle both have quite a few foreign recordings. Check Footlight as well--I recently bought a Mexican recording of Cabaret.

Wow, it looks like there's a Japanese West Side Story. No Spanish, but Japanese....hmmmmm....

And do a search for My Fair Lady on Footlight.com. Several foreign language recordings.

RENT in Dutch is one of my FAVORITES. Also the 2000 or 2001 Mexican cast of JCS is one of, if not the best, one out there.

Rent - Dutch Cast. The actress playing Mimi who belts the "oooout (tonight)"s, as opposed to flipping into a head-voice. Gotta love it, she's awesome.

Speaking of Rent, The different orchestrations on the Swedish Cast's version... definately interesting. Though, at times, I find it quite awesome.

Anyone heard the version of "Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer" on the Japanese version of CATS? Why is the song entirely different? I vaguely remember hearing the intro in an old version on some Webber set. It sounds so weird, though.

Also, wanted to add that the Dutch cast of Aida is quite fun.

Sorry, I don't have any of those cds you mentioned.

Yeah, Takeshi Kaga plays Tony on that recording of WSS.

You might know him as Valjean...or, better yet, the MC on Iron Chef. :)

A good source for german recordings is www.soundofmusic.de

I particularly love 'Tanz der Vampire' and the latest 'Elisabeth' recording 2003/4 cast Vienna.

Plus the german 'Aida' from Essen has absolutely gorgeous orchestrations. In fact I prefer it to the Broadway version for that reason, although the Broadway version is great cos I understand the lyricsre: non-English recordings of musicals

good luck finding anything in Czech.....I believe a major production has to be mounted in the country mto even have a cast recording considered......and frankly I've heard of nothing of that magnitude done in Prague.
I have POTO, Ms. Saigon, Joseph, Titanic, RENT, Starlight Express in German (and also German language productions such as Tanz, Elisabeth, Mozart, Gaudi, etc)
I also have RENT hilights in Icelandic.
I usually go to amazon.de, or get them when I'm in the country.
Vamp, thanks for the link......will see what they have there.

gotta love it. Right one of the "recordings part, is 1776 listed.......read the description. They say it's about the American Civil War, lol.......cracks me up...only because in general, Europeans are much more aware of world history than we are........ask any group of American adults when the hundred years war was, and you'll get so many different answers

Chris -- thanks! Amazon uk was no help when I looked before, but I'd forgotten about Dress Circle! Amazing such a physically tiny store can have such great variety. They had a couple things I didn't even know were done in Czech -- like "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change"! Great resource. I shall now scrap together the funds to get them re: non-English recordings of musicals (I'll check out e-bay too...)

Elphaba -- They've been done! I saw a GREAT production of JC Superstar when I lived there (theatre in the round - saw it 9 times). I think Les Mis sort of kicked it all off in '92. It's in reading the bios for the actors in Les Mis that I see how many other shows have been mounted!

Thanks all. Let me know if you think of anything else :)

I just rented Chicago on DVD and the second audio is French. The whole movie is in french, including the songs. It's very well done.

Also the DVDs of Oliver and My Fair Lady.

I dont have those cds, actually the only non_english cast recording I have is Der Glockner von Notre Dame which is the German cast of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. It is so good the guy who plays Quasi is wonderful and Clopin is outstanding. Esmeralda is wonderful as well. Einmal which is "Someday" is the most beautiful song in the score with the chorus singing it.

The Japanese Phantom CDs are great, and the Swedish one is "live" which is cool

Cats from Hamburg is the best Cats recording ive ever heard, but i havent heard any of the japan cats.

also Hamburg's Lion King is great and the Nala on the Dutch Cast is truly amazing.

Glad someone else likes 'Der Glockner von Notre Dame' toore: non-English recordings of musicals It was the first german language musical I saw (and look what it lead to!) and was visually stunning as well as being a 'proper' musical (ie I find Disney's Beauty & the Beast has too much of a pantomine feel for me personally).

'Einmal' is definitely my favourite, it sounds so beautifulre: non-English recordings of musicals

So if you're looking for more foreign recordings, add that to the list
