Gee, who could play Sebastian Valmont? broadwayguy2 - I'm sure you have some thoughts on this.

Mister Matt, you had me laughing so hard that everyone around me starting staring. I second this idea whole heartedly. Just think of the beautiful ballad that could be sung while Alan is ridding Nugget. Or how about the wrenching scene where he blinds all the horses with a hoof pick in a musical fury? It has Tony written all over it!

Speaking of plays I studied in senior english re: re: re: re: re: NEW MUSICAL ideas., I heard Kander and Ebb have a musical version of Durrenmatt's "The Visit" in the work...that's an idea absurd enough to add to this list.

I saw the premiere of Kander and Ebb's The Visit. It starred Chita Rivera and was very strange. The sets were surreal and Chita's choreography with the wooden leg really misused this star's talents. The story was quite interesting, but too dark for the typical musical theatre-going crowd. With the exception of the second act opener, "Yellow Shoes", the score was forgettable. The Goodman Theatre in Chicago is a great place to catch new musicals, though. The Visit was far more appealing than the recent Sondheim, Bounce. In January, they will present Adam Guettel's new musical, A Light in the Piazza and in March, the Off-Broadway musical Crowns. I look forward to seeing both.

Right now, though, I'm getting my tickets for the tours of Hairspray, Urinetown and the new Gary Griffin staging of A Little Night Music.

Adam pascal - you've got to be kidding me, the guy can't ACT!!!

Anyway to answer the question and I know people hate the idea of classic movies like Hairspray being made into musicals but I think 'trapped in Pardaside" would make an ellect musical but that's just me

Whoah..my heart stopped nomoredisney with your comment...but i am going to ignore your Pascal comment...

I think someone should do something like You've Got Mail. I would love to see that as a musical. Or even Sleepless in Seatle. Can you imagine it? Or maybe I am crazy re: re: re: re: re: re: re: re: NEW MUSICAL ideas.

Is there a stage musical of Willie Wonka anywhere? I think they are making a new movie version of it with Alan Cumming as Willie Wonka, but why not just do it on Broadway with Alan?

You've Got Mail was also musicalized earlier than SHE LOVES ME and that was in the film IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME with Judy Garland, Van Johnson and the toddler Liza Minnelli.

i think we NEED more dark musicals. even some horror musicals that are serious in tone, as opposed to horror comedy. like maybe a show based on the whole Hannibal or Silence/lambs books. or something Stephen King..( I realize Carrie will be brought up and I am totally saddened that I didn't catch that..I blinked you know)
anyway..

fyffe - It's funny you should mention Stephen King. I always thought Misery would make a good musical (seriously - I was kidding before about Equus). If it was based on the original novel, the scenes between Annie and Paul could be juxtaposed with scenes from the novel she is forcing him to write. The chapters in the book of his Misery novel is filled with sweeping melodramatic romance that could elevate the "love" Annie feels for Paul.

Other ideas - My Best Friend's Wedding (the songs featured on the soundtrack would actually fit nicely into the show) and Heart and Souls

I wouldn't mind seeing Moulin Rouge transfered into a stage show, but it would probably be like Baz's La Boheme--beautifully done and extremely artistic, but not very lucrative. I'd go see it though.
