Just got in from Gypsy...everytime I see it I still think what a ripoff it was that Marissa won that Tony. The theatre was half empty so they were bumping people's seats from balcony to front Mezz which was nice. Bernadette seemed to be loosing her voice and really straining. Anyone else notice this?
When I saw Gypsy it was with great understudies for Louise and June, which only made me enjoy it the more. It's a brilliant musical and its leading lady manages to be compelling in a trying role, and I'm surprised no one's been singling out John Dosset for his great performance as Herbie...but I couldn't shake the feeling of something being off. It's like all the set and scenery was designed with the singular thought, "You want a set? Fine, have a set." And I'm amazed that an acclaimed musical like Gypsy has so big a hole in its dramatic interest as "Little Lamb," which fails utterly at giving Louise anything like a crucial bit of characterization.
I can't bear listening to Hairspray's songs (bubblegum pop, which Hairspray's score is unapologetically, is pretty much unlistenable for me), so I can neither evaluate that show from the cast album or actually seeing it live. But Peters seemed to be turning in a worthy performance in acting. Not as sure about her vocals.

check the bway grosses there teacher even though its had steady weeks of 70%-80%
last week was 73% two weeks before was 64% it has dipped as low as 45% (even w/ Bernadette)
and remember during bernadettes vacation they discounted seats to get the theatres full. Just because someone renews a contract for another year doesnt mean the show will stay open. what happens if Bernadette leaves after her one year ... will they get the star replacement to continue to bring in the people?
Here comes the horrible winter months and we will see what happens!!

Emma, you are mistaken. I went and took a look at the past grosses. The week it was at 45% was September 29-October 5, which WAS during the week of Bernadette Peters vacation. It has never dipped that low with Bernadette. As for the week where it was at 64%, (October 27-November 2) which was the Halloween/Daylight Savings week, most shows took a significant hit that week. 42nd Street was down $114,000, Movin' Out was down $123,000, The Producers was down $125,000 and Thoroughly Modern Millie was down $151,000. (People just don't seem to want to go to the theatre when the clocks change, for some reason - the same thing happens every year).
Don't worry, people, as long as most people go to theater to see that which they've already seen, know and trust and that which is completely without modern sensibilities or interests, a revival of 'Gypsy' will always have a home on Broadway.
And if you can't see it on Broadway it's equally vibrant in dinner theaters and community theater all across the Great White Plains.
Still, JohnPopa, Gypsy may be the least comforting of any of the Golden Era titles. It basically tells you that your parents spend their lives destroying you, then they get old and you get to take care of them. The show depicted a dysfunctional single parent family, long before they were in fashion. Plus, it glorifies a no-talent who takes her lack of talent to the top of her field ... something that certainly happens in spades these days. Pretending that Gypsy has nothing to say to modern audiences is being just too casually dismissive of a great, multi-faceted work that I feel is welcome any time someone wants to bring it to Broadway.
Yes, I really do. I think Will and Grace is big enough and her character well known and TV stars have seemed to do well (box office wise, I won't comment on their abilities ) on Broadway. Plus she has real musical theater experience to bring to the role that would bring some of the more serious theater goers in to see her in the role - not just "let's go see Karen from Will and Grace". Plus she would fall into the younger, sexier Rose of this production.
Unfortunately with her TV schedule, it would be difficult to get her to commit but I'm hoping for at least a short stint after Bernadette leaves. One can dream!
I agree with moljul. I think Megan is an excellent choice. But people would have to remember that when they go they wouldn't be seeing Karen Walker. When one person is identified by the character they play on television it can be very difficult for the boob-tube addicts to get past that. I think Cyndi would be adorable in the role, but I don't think she can act the part. Though she and Bernadette have something in common: both born and raised in Ozone Park Queens, and only 5 or 6 years apart. I wonder if they ever crossed paths as children? Plus they both look great for their age.

As much as it pains me to say this, I have to. Liza couldn't do Gypsy 8 times a week. I think her voice couldn't handle it. Her voice is barely hanging in there as it is. It's a shame she'll never get the chance to play Rose. I think she could have done the show back during the '89 revival, which would have been perfect timing for her, but she's not able to pull it off vocally these days.
There's no shortage of Stars and semi-stars they could bring in after Bernadette leaves. I am least of all Lupone fans, but let's face it, she'd be brilliant as Rose. I wonder about Lanie Kazan. Yes, Megan Mulally could do it. Cyndi Lauper is a better actress than some are giving her credit for. I acn see her mama Rose having some real similarities to lansbury, who in many ways was the most surprisingly New Yorkish of Roses. BUT -- what if Cyndi had done Roxy instead of that big sloppy blonde, you know the one one married to Antonio? Lauper would have been senstaional in that role.
