This is the worst review I have ever read....She is performing in London.....and this critic slams her talent and her personality......saying how dare her do this show.....My question is How does a performer get through this kind of review and go on......It is almost like they have to be "Hard as Nails".....

She is in a hard... no VERY had profession. At times critics are going to be nasty. She is the daughter of a true legend, and thus held to a way higher standard ( Fair ..no, but a fact). Ms. Luft grew up in the "biz" so she knows that bad ( And I mean REALLY bad reviews) are all part of it. She will go on the next night and the night after that its all part of the gig.

"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

Lorna always gets shafted. Is there a link to the review?

I saw Lorna years ago a few times when she was performing at Rainbow and Stars on an annual basis. Her voice was amazing - her patter and presence weren't great, but her voice and her ability to sell a song were. She's also a very nice lady. That review makes me sad.

I have never been so shocked at a review...She got good reviews in the States...That critic had nothing good to say about her...It was almost evil!!!!!

Lorna's limelight has always been dimmer than Liza's.
She's had really hard times in the past (anyone who's read Me and My Shadows will know). Compared to some of the stuff she's had to face, this review is about the size of a papercut. I only hope this show someday comes to Broadway.

Saw this in LA - and while I readily admit that Ms. Luft has admirable chops and adequate stage presense, she in NO WAY comes close to dynamic galvanizing stage presenses of her mother or sister. Her act was polished and adroit - but distant. The NEED that Judy and Liza had to connect with their audience was not there. Not sorry I went at all - and she certainly doesn't deserve bad reviews - but this might be the cost of setting yourself within the realm of the mother whose reputation you've faught against all your life.

I also saw this show in Los Angeles and I agree 100 % with Dgrant.. But furthermore the whole affair was kind of creepy/ the day I went half the audience was from a retirement home and I felt like I was on a Carnival cruise.

All the other reviews have been glowing, one critic calling her a "living legend." Nevertheless, there are people who relish in putting Lorna down, just as there are people who relish Liza when she's a mess, just as there were people who relished Judy when she was a mess.

Thanks for that info, Pal. That's good to know. I really hope this show gets to NY.

I don't think she's that well received in the States either. Arthur Whitelaw (writer/director of Snoopy) said this morning that everyone kind of turned against her, as she's just out for making money out of her mother... Well, I haven't seen her yet, though she's not really on my wish list anyway.

I don't relish putting anyone down - and I certainly don't relish Liza when she's a mess or Judy when she was a mess...but Lorna, in all tv appearances I have ever seen - always seems cold and distant to me, whether or not she's a good singer. I don't think I'd be interested in seeing her perform live.

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Songs My Mother Taught Me - a review of Lorna Luft's show
by Chris Goepfert

On Tuesday 20th April, in the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, I was lucky enough to see a showcase of Songs My Mother Taught Me, performed by Lorna Luft.

The show is basically the story of Judy Garland seen through her daughter Lorna's eyes. Through the journey we learn a great deal about both mother and daughter - the great shows are all there, the arrangements are fantastic and Lorna is in great voice and more that does justice to her mother's memory.

There is a particularly clever reworking of Born in a Trunk to encompass parts of Judy's career. Great use is also made of a video screen where we get to see clips of Judy herself performing - and the 'duetting ' between the two is superbly staged.

I understand the show is due to come to London in June for a limited season. I urge anyone who loves Judy, Lorna or just great music to watch this space for further details.

A definite must-see for the coming summer.

I said in my original post on this subject, Redhot, that her stage presence and patter are not the best, but her voice is amazing. She is a really nice lady in person, but if we can even try to put ourselves in her place - it might be hard to not come off as "cold" or "distant" - she's in an impossible situation and is probably never comfortable. As far as "making money off her mother", she's tried everything else and has not been accepted...I heard she was a wonderful Adelaide, but nothing else came of a musical theater career for some reason. She hasn't had a booming film or tv career either, and she's tried. I think for raw vocal talent, she's leaps and bounds ahead of Liza, but Liza was in a better position, and has the passion and incredible acting talent, plus the publicity from day one that Lorna never had.
