Beginning next Friday, August 19th, Broadway's The Kite Runner will require audiences to wear masks at Friday evening performances at the Hayes Theater (240 West 44th Street). This will be effective through the limited engagement ending on October 30.
Producer Victoria Lang said, "We have received feedback from some theatregoers who remain cautious about being in an audience with non-masked patrons, as well as others who are still immunocompromised. We want to give everyone the opportunity to see The Kite Runner and are offering this option to accommodate them."
All other performances will follow the Broadway League policy of masks optional.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Even though I'm firmly in favor of the mask-optional policy on Broadway, I actually think this is a really good move, from a business standpoint.
And it effectively doesn't change anything about the mask-optional policy, because those who would rather not wear a mask (which is completely valid, and in no way deserving of scorn) can just choose to attend the show on a different day.
Very interesting, and I can only image/assume people on these boards (myself included) will check out the ticket availability for Fridays to see how this plays out.
Also, a regional theatre near my hometown has done a season this year where they offer both full capacity shows and ones with only 50% capacity to entice those who might be a little weary.
