Tonight, the National High School Musical Theatre Awards — the Jimmys — are back in person at the Minskoff Theatre for the first time in 3 years. For all those interested, you can stream this year's ceremony starting at 7:30 PM; it will be up to watch on YouTube through June 30 only. Kate Reinders (Something Rotten!, "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" ) hosts.
The highlight, to me, was their beautiful salute to Sondheim. It was introduced by Christopher Sieber (from ''Company'' ) and starts at the 1:15:45 mark. I can't imagine a more touching song for young performers to sing than ''Our Time'' from ''Merrily We Roll Along.'' And those lyrics: 'It's our heads on the block. Give us room, and start the clock. Our dream, coming true. Me and you pal, me and you ...''
Mr. Nederlander is like that every year. I don't think it is lack of enthusiasm. It appeared to be more of being uncomfortable speaking in front of crowds to me.
I was surprised at the winner for the girls. There were two other girls in the final that were neck and neck for me.
I really like Reinders but the constant plug for her show got to be a bit much.(But I LOVE her in the show) Her opening could have been really trimmed down.
I was surprised at the winner for the girls. There were two other girls in the final that were neck and neck for me. I think it was her natural acting skill that put her over the top. Go back and watch her again. She nailed it.
A wonderful ceremony! It sounded like the audience was THRILLED to have the Jimmys back in person (even though the reception was lessened on the YouTube feed).
I loved the opening medley, Sondheim tribute, and female composer / lyricist bit. Reinders was okay as host but a bit too cloying.
I wish there was an "In Memoriam" section for all those in the Jimmy family who lost their lives in the COVID pandemic, seeing as this was the first in-person ceremony since 2019, but alas.
Congrats to the winners, finalists, and all the other nominees — many of whom sounded fantastic in their group medleys and solo numbers. I cannot wait to see where you end up!
