"'Eyes of Tammy Faye" movie trailer

I watched this trailer today and was completely blown away by both Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye and Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker.  I didn't even know that this film was being made, but I feel that it will taking home more than a few Oscars!...

I watched the PTL Club as often as possible.  For one reason alone:  Tammy Faye.  I loved her singing; her spirituality; her exuberance; her makeup.  And most especially, I loved her for supporting our LGBTQ communities,  I truly miss her.

I was/am a huge Tammy Faye fan. I found the trailer a bit OTT. I think the make-up and prosthetics look a tad garish. While I know Tammy looked garish, she didn’t look fake. It was completely organic to who she was. She transcended the drag. To me, Jessica (who I love) looks very fake and constructed. It took me out of her performance. She looks like a Klump with the cheeks and orange tan and huge breasts and front butt. She sounds like she’s doing a Fargo accent and missing the high pitch and chirp in Tammy’s voice. If she’s going to do an impersonation I think you gotta go for broke or don’t try.

I’ll wait to see the film to judge, but the trailer seems to want to appeal to a camp factor which I think is the wrong take.

I think the makeup treatment done on Bernadette Peters for the TV film was far more effective than what I see on Jessica.

We shall see.

I eat my words. Jessica was really fantastic. Garfield is marvelous too. As a huge Tammy Faye fan, I’m really bored by the PTL story and quite over it. I know it inside and out. I’ve read every book and seen every doc. Jessica is fantastic but there is really no new ground tread there. Many scenes are literally cribbed from the Eye of Tammy Faye doc. People new to her life will be interested. Hardcore fans will be a bit bored.

It’s a shame Tammy in the 90s is such a small part of the film because it’s where Jessica launches into the stratosphere with the portrayal. She will shatter your heart. I really wish they’d focused more on her later life but I know a studio wouldn’t get behind that. My god she’s brilliant in the 90s scenes.
