I know that I'm in the minority, but I'm REALLY hoping for Streep as Morrible.

And she started vocal prep when she knew an audition might be coming.

I have 2 friends working on the film and they heard some of Ariana’s rehearsal material and she’s indeed singing the score as written.  Not in her pop music stylings.  Erivo’s Elphaba is completely her own and truly makes all the others who played the role on stage, including Menzel, sound like high school musical theater students.

Not to bum you out, but I don’t think there’s a chance Streep would take this role. I already wouldn’t expect her to take on a thankless part for two films, but Streep also refuses to play witches, only making an exception for Into the Woods because she wanted to do a Sondheim musical.

I wonder when we'll get our first look at the two of them in character.

I'll believe that when i see it. But it does sound a bit confidant

She isn't going to be singing this score in her usual pop/r&b voice. Not even a question to me.

Rehearsals begin soon. In the Nessarose casting call, it said June or July.

But she literally does the pop/r&b voice in that video

The idea that Erivo is making some exceptionally powerful vocalists, some of whom figuratively blow the roof off auditoriums with their strong vocal performances "sound like high school musical theater students" is so ridiculously lacking in comparative common sense that it makes me worried for her vocals/performance in the film.

If someone working on the film feels the need to denigrate the many talented women who have played Elphaba on stage, especially those post-Menzel who were often vocal powerhouses, in an attempt to praise Erivo's performance, then it feels like they're trying to get ahead of criticism. Whether the criticism is that she can't perform the score or her performance in general is off.

"She's sooo much better than EVERY other Elphaba, omg, they're all high school performers compared to her!!"

Not buying it.

"Sho' wuz"? Gross.

Although if two paragraphs is too much for you to handle, perhaps you and your hyperbolic friends working on this potential flop of a film are in good company.

Slang usage on the internet is gross to you? Grow up.

As for Erivo’s performance, it’s delusional to think she wouldn’t absolutely kill the score. Did you see The Color Purple? Everything about your post seems unnecessarily negative about something we haven’t seen yet, so please get a hobby

This comment  comes off as pure hyperbole and an unnecessary “slap in the face” to all  of the many talented women who brought  the character of “Elphaba” to life on stage.

No one should never, ever should knock down other people to elevate others.

It lacks class.

I speak for myself that I wont be guided by the opinion of others - although they are most certainly entitled to theirs.

I will reserve judgment when I actually hear it.

The proof is always in the pudding.

"Opinions are very interesting because we all have different ones. You are entitled to your opinion, but that does not mean you should always give it to others, especially when your opinion is not necessarily grounded in truth, but in what you believe or want to believe."

Slang isn't gross, but using slang from outdated Lost Cause narratives that mock AAVE is, yes.

It's quite odd that you don't think two people working on the film being boldly negative about every single actress who ever played Elphaba on stage isn't unnecessary. There's a difference between someone saying "Erivo is killing the score" and "She's sooo amazing, she makes ALL other Elphabas look like high school performers, lolololol." That type of delusional hyperbole--pumping up Erivo's performance at the expense of dragging others down--doesn't bode well.

We got it.  No need to continue ranting.  Go outside for a walk.  Move on.  No need to keep dragging your point. Wow!  You truly are a piece of work.  This is just a message board.  You read comments.  You see one that upsets you, you move on.  You DON’T let it affect you.  You have some pie instead.  Life’s too short, bro.  To argue with strangers.  kiss

A message board is for discussing. Sorry that your friends working on the film unnecessarily dragging down every actress to play Elphaba in an attempt to boost Erivo up wasn't perfectly received in a vacuum or given only butt pats.

If you'd like to make comments that no one can respond to, I suggest tweeting with the comment option locked. Otherwise, time to put on your grown up pants and deal with other people discussing what you say.

It's not affecting me, though I'm sure you fervently wish it was, much in the same way your buddies wish Erivo was actually making actresses like Willemijn Verkaik look like a high school performers. You, on the other hand, seem quite in a tizzy about a single negative comment over your friend's unnecessary negativity. Wonder why that is.

Blessed day! heart

Oh dear, you think that writing a few sentences means that I'm upset? If reading a few sentences is too much for you and indicates anything other than someone sharing their thoughts, I don't know what to tell you. Seems like you prefer people to shut up and mindlessly praise others.

"Omg!! They are SOOo right about Erivo! She makes veteran actresses with incredible voices look like HIGH SCHOOL PERFORMERS :P :P :P :P :P!!" seems more up your alley.

You defended your statements when you attempted to shut me down merely for responding to them. Again, if you want a vacuum, there are options for that.

How Erivo and Grande will sing the score should be much further down on people's list of questions about this project- which still has yet to announce casting of any other role, nor given more information on what a two-part adaptation would even look like (will there be more songs? does this mean they have to rewrite the screenplay? are they leaning on the novel more? etc). Bit of the cart before the horse here.
