I am wondering why Sara Bareilles never received a voice over credit for Waitress. Her voice is most evident during the intro of “What’s Inside.” She isn’t credited for it anywhere and I’m just wondering why. I am also wondering if they kept her voice over on the non-equity tour and if they did, wouldn’t that break some equity rules?

I do not think that was Sara's voice in any of the pre-recorded "sugar, butter, flour" underscoring; it may have actually been the respective actress playing the role at the time. If they used Sara's pre-show speech/song, that's a whole other story.

It was definitely Sara when Jessie Mueller was Jenna. I’d recognize her voice any where.

I’m almost positive that it was not her voice for the Non-Equity tour.

Individual or Duet Recordings. An Actor engaged to record material which is individual in nature (i.e., recognizable) for use in the production may do so provided that Actor is originally contracted for the duty or contracted by rider to participate in such recording and further provided that Actor is compensated upon leaving the production at no less than two weeks' contractual salary for each 26 weeks' use of the recording. An Actor engaged solely for a recording who is not engaged to otherwise perform in the production will be signed to a contract and compensated at no less than two weeks' minimum salary for each 26 weeks' use of the recording.

The sugar, butter, flour line, the one that is heard right before Jenna starts to sing What’s Inside, is Bareilles’s voice. They also used, as their pre show no cell phone announcement, the song that Sara wrote. I know that if there’s a pre recorded track being used in the show, it has to be of the particular performer. For example, in Phantom, if the alternate Christine is on, they have to use that respective actresses voice recording. Same for the leads.

What I cant figure out is, how all that works as far as credits are concerned.

It’s always Sara. The prerecord isn’t Jenna, it’s Jenna’s memory of her mother.

I just think it's a shame there's no official recording of Sara as Jenna. She was my favorite Jenna.

Was John Waters credited for his voice over on Motormouth 's radio in HAIRSPRAY? I can't remember.

Not Waitress but related - I always found it interesting that Rory O'Malley's voice is still used for Moroni in Book of Mormon's opening narration rather than re-recording for whichever actor is playing McKinley/Moroni. Especially since that actor has to sing live as Moroni later in the show.

^adding to the conversation of The Book of Mormon, are Matt and Trey credited for their V/O at the beginning of the both acts in the show?

Just checked my Playbill, they aren't. Neither is Rory O'Malley - Moroni is credited as the actor who plays McKinley, with no mention that Rory is the voice in the opening.

Similarly, Mel Brooks has vocal cameos in “The Producers” that he isn’t credited for, and John Cleese plays God in “Spamalot” and gets credited for the role.

Was Anderson Cooper uncredited for How to Succeed as well?

I'm not sure why its such a mystery. The actors/personalities would have agreed to it...but likely still recd pay.

Anderson was credited as "The Voice of the Narrator," top of the cast list in the playbill. He even got a bio.

Mel Brooks also voiced the cat screech that Max threw during “it’s bad luck to say good luck” song as I recall.
