So the only open theatres for the Spring are Nederlander, Broadway, and Booth?

Very interesting situation for shows hoping to come in. I'm sure a lot of producers are clambering for the Booth, and/or waiting to see if another theatre opens up. Like maybe the Golden? So hard to get the lay of the land here without grosses, and when many shows still haven't re-opened.

The Golden situation is strange because "Thoughts of a Colored Man" currently displays a planned closing date of March 20th - very unusual timing for a fall limited run. Normally they'd end in January or February to make way for a Spring show to make it in before the Tony cutoff. As it stands now, there's no way another show could swing that turnaround. I guess, from their perspective it makes sense from a business standpoint - if they're making more than their weekly nut, then they'll want to squeeze out as many weeks as possible to recoup. But I'm surprised the Shuberts would allow that.

It's probably moot anyway, because if the anecdotal here-say is to be believed, there's no way they make it to March 20th.

"Sing Street" could probably only take the Booth or the Nederlander if they're feeling optimistic.

"For Colored Girls" could take the Golden (which would create an interesting titular parallel between the 2 shows that play there this season)

"Piano Lesson" could probably take any of the open theatres except the Broadway. They'd benefit from the intimacy of the Booth or Golden, but with those big-name actors, I doubt they'd have much trouble in the Nederlander.

The Nederlander could go a lot of different ways - medium scale musicals will want to avoid the Broadway at all costs, so they may be eager to settle for the Nederlander, while some of the smaller shows might be unable to secure the Booth or the Golden, and wondering if they can fill the Nederlander instead.

Won't The Visitor transfer some time next spring (if it ever does)?

If I recall correctly, there has always been a rumour that Billy Crystal's show, "Mr. Saturday Night" was intending on taking the Nederlander

Dana H. is now closing November 13 and Is This a Room November 14. Lackawanna Blues is extended to November 12.

It must be disappointing that Dana H/Is This a Room weren't able to find a larger audience despite all the races but I love that they were able to make it to Broadway to begin with.

Also, I have Lackawanna Blues listed under the revival category but I'm thinking now that it'll probably be counted as a new play? Does anyone happen to know for sure?

Lackawanna Blues is a revival by virtually every available metric. The original production was 20 years ago – so much like “How I Learned to Drive,” there’s no way they can spin it as a “transfer.” And even moreso than HILTD, this is actually a new production. It’s a different director (RSH himself), and a new design team. There was also a film adaptation of the play well over a decade ago, which adds further heft to the “classics rule” criteria.

A little late on this, but Windows by Tawni O’Dell is coming to Broadway for a spring 2022 production.  Ohio State Murders with Audra McDonald will also be coming as well, though we don't have specific dates or a theater for either of them yet.  I should mention also that it's not even confirmed Ohio State Murders will be coming in this season, though that was my initial assumption.

For those following along, the Broadway Theatre is completely open and the Booth and Nederlander open in January.  And it seems possible for shows like Diana, Thoughts of a Colored Man, and Jagged Little Pill to close early enough to allow another show to take their theater this season.

Just over 45 years after it originally opened in the same space! Put this in the "play revivals" category on the first post in this thread, chrishuyen.

The Little Prince will be coming to the Broadway Theatre in a strictly limited engagement, starting March 4, 2022 with an opening of March 17, and closing August 14. Not quite clear yet whether this is a musical or play with music, but to me it seems most like a "special theatrical event" so that's where I'll list it for now.

Thoughts of a Colored Man announced the end of its run, which I'm kind of disappointed about because I wanted to see it after the new year. But it also means that now the Golden and Broadhurst are available for possible incoming shows, though I wonder if producers will start pumping the brakes on transfers in case of another shutdown.

Also does anyone know if Romeo and Bernadette still has Broadway ambitions? I saw they're postponing their off Broadway return but I couldn't see anything about whether they were still planning on an eventual Broadway transfer

A Strange Loop will begin previews April 6 with an opening of April 26, which I assume is before the cut off date for this season's Tonys (but to my knowledge no such date has been publicly announced yet).

"The Kite Runner" is a weird case, because it has been kicking around - produced here and there - for 15 years. So a case could be made that it would fall under the Classics Rule to be considered a revival. Especially because the current production directed by Giles Croft is not actually the original direction that the show premiered with in California.

However, I'm guessing it will still be considered a new play. Because even though it's been around for 15 years and has had a variety of productions, it hasn't worked its way into the cannon in a significant way. And the most high-profile production so far was the one on the West End, which was recent enough (5 years ago) to reasonably fall under the label of "transfer." And that production was, in turn, new enough to not be considered a revival - despite the new direction. It's a bizarre series of stepping stones. A kind of daisy-chain stretching the definition of "new" to its limits.

^When I posted that, I forgot that Kite Runner will technically be considered "next season." For a blissful moment, I forgot that the Broadway community divides seasons solely using the CBS calendar, and not the way things actual work in the theatre industry - i.e Fall through summer.

Wonder how the money-raising for this spring is going. I would be hesitant to invest in a spring show in what's already a risky business. Wondering if we'll see any shows cancelled this spring due to an inability to raise the money –– such as FOR COLORED GIRLS or A STRANGE LOOP or LITTLE PRINCE or even FUNNY GIRL or the return of BEETLEJUICE. (Shows don't have to be fully capitalized until opening night.) I certainly wouldn't think negatively of any show that chooses to delay.

Looking at Telecharge, it seems that The Minutes has pushed its first preview from March 19th to April 2nd. The run still concludes on July 10th. The opening of April 7th is still off sale at the moment, but entirely possible it moves.

Hangmen will be playing at the Golden starting April 8, with an opening date of April 21 and a closing date of June 18.

And as mentioned in prior posts, The  Minutes now starts previews April 2 with an opening of April 17 and looks like it's on sale through July 24, though it seems to be an open-ended run.

According to this new EPA posted on Playbill, a play called "POTUS" by Selina Fillinger and directed by Susan Stroman is coming to Broadway "Spring 2022, as early as March 2022." I wonder which theater they are going into... maybe the Broadhurst? https://playbill.com/job/potus-equity-video-submissions-deadline-02-11-22/6744531f-a8ef-4279-918d-2f0001d67469

POTUS is official for the Shubert, previews April 14, opening May 9, playing through August 14, and what a cast!

EDIT: forgot that eligibility was based on opening and not previews, so it will most likely be part of next season, whoops!

We don't know if it's considered this season, yet. Unless they extend the eligibility date that far into May, it will be 2022-23. Granted, it's possible, but with so many shows' openings crammed into April, seemingly to make the deadline, it seems unlikely. Since there's been no official word, though, who knows?

David Gordon reported this afternoon that the Broadway League lists POTUS as part of the current season. Interesting.
