It's WAY past time.

The House votes tomorrow, June 26th.  The Republican Senate and White House oppose Statehood.......because they're the Republican Senate and White House.

Where would that extra star go on the flag?

If you scroll down to "History," it shows a possible flag.

If they add Puerto Rico at the same time, they can go straight to a 52 star design!

And then there's the issue of what the new State would be named.  We already have Washington State.  One possibility was "New Columbia".

Any suggestions?

700,000 are without representation, I could care less where an extra star goes on the flag to be honest.

Douglass Commonwealth is the expected name as of current plans.

I don’t necessarily agree it should be a state. I do think it could use a voting member in Congress, though. There are several ramifications with DC becoming a state and that includes the federal government losing a ton of protections.

How about "East Virginia" or "West Maryland"?

The House passed the Bill to grant Statehood to D.C.  All Republicans and one Democrat voted against it.

And this is probably as far as Statehood for D.C. will go.  For now.

You think Republicans are interested in giving voting power to a city that is 45% black?

Perhaps if they could spin up a new solidly red state to balance things out. I suspect that Florida's 1st congressional district would leap at the opportunity to become the new state of West Florida.

In the early 1970's, I was stationed with the U.S. Navy at NAS Pensacola,.  There were maybe half a dozen gay bars in town.  The local conservative officials wanted to close the bars.  There didn't seem to be a legal way to close them, so they approached the Navy and asked that the bars be declared Off Limits to military personnel.  They figured that if the bars lost income, they would close up.  To its credit, the Navy said NO.  There was much that I liked about "West Florida," but I was very happy when it came time for me to be transferred.  I've never returned.  WAY too red for me.
