I just watched the movie last night for the first time and I kept thinking how amazing it would make as a musical! Get on it Tim Minchin!

The original Goldie Hawn/Kurt Russell classic or the recent mess of a remake with Anna Faris?

A very cute idea for a show, and it will never happen, and we all know why.

The remake was perfectly fine, no better or worse than the original. Could be a fun property to adapt, though I can’t say I have a desire to see it.

Great idea to work from the original version.

But, c’mon, we’re all waiting for Housesitter: The Musical. Imagine the possibilities to cover a range of styles as Gwen shifts her stories. How fierce would some fun patter songs be when the stories really get rapid fire? The house could be a big reveal/elaborate piece if needed, like Beetlejuice. I would love to see Gavin Creel & Laura Benanti. Or skew it older for Cheno.

OMG this could be fabulous. We could fill the orchestra pit with water so when she falls overboard, she really falls into the water. That's a key plot point so her banging her head on a railing or something just isn't going to cut it. How do you have a show called Overboard if nobody goes overboard, right? We could make the first 2 rows of the orchestra the "splash zone" and sell $40 Overboard ponchos. Now for the leads, only one actor could possibly play the Kurt Russell part. Of course that would be Andy Karl. The pitch to him would be easy "Andy babe, you've taken iconic 70's, 80's and 90's movies like Rocky, Pretty Woman and Groundhog Day and tried to make them musical theater hits and it hasn't worked out. But even you can see a forgettable, mediocre 80's movie like Overboard has big, fat "take my money" hit written all over it." For Goldie's part, hmmm, Whoever it is, is going to have to look good in that leopard print one piece thong... that was the most iconic moment of the film so they gotta keep that, right? Lady Gaga is probably too young. As we saw from Pretty Woman, Orfeh certainly has the right look but is probably not quite a big enough name. Maybe Scarlett Johansson is tired of all that Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller stuff and is ready for a real test of her acting ability. Oh man, this is going to be good!!!

Ironically, Goldie Hawn's PRIVATE BENJAMIN is one of my favorites & along these lines I've always wondered how it might translate to stage as a musical.

(While watching Overboard seven years after seeing Pvt. Benjamin I kept making analogies between the two.)

Did you really refer to the original Hawn / Russell film as a 'classic' ?

Sorry for the delayed response. A lot of people online will tell you that Overboard glorifies rape. I recognize this is beyond silly, but there are enough posts here on other topics to demonstrate that our current woke Broadway (or current woke emphatic Broadway fans who post on message boards and try to control the discourse) would crucify anyone who attempted such a thing. Unless, I guess, it became the male character who developed amnesia--then it would go back to being just silly fun again.

I never saw the remake, but I thought the original was cute. Wouldn't call it a classic. but it was sweet and fun and far better at being a screwball romantic comedy than any of the other rom-coms made around the same time.

Are there really a lot of people online in 2019 actively discussing and becoming outraged at the plot of a long forgotten 1987 rom-com? Really? I wish I had that kind of free time. Let's hope they never discuss making a musical out of Home Alone. The outrage over glorifying and making light of child abandonment and abuse would be deafening.

Yes there are. Check out Slate sometime. When the remake came out, it was a common topic. Even before the remake, it was referenced frequently.

Here's an article (not from Slate) on the topic. https://www.hermeout.com/blog/overboard

I prefaced my comment with "actively in 2019". Were there a few comments when the remake came out 18 months ago, sure, but are people actively discussing it now or were they actively discussing it before the remake came out? I don't really think so. Your attempt to justify your point with an assortment of garbage links to such heavy hitting blogs like hermeout, sweensryche which actually is from 2011 and absolutelypointless (which you posted twice - your attention to detail is indeed impressive) is just sad. You probably didn't even read most of what you posted cause the Miami New Times article is just a reprint of the review you posted from the Village Voice.. My favorite was the reddit post from 2 years ago as if a discussion among 4 people on a reddit subboard represents current contemporary thinking of the masses. And if I go to Slate and do a search for "Overboard movie", what I get is a link to the review of the movie remake from 2018 and... nothing else.  Don't worry friend. I would never ask you to do my research for me cause research is clearly not your strength. What you have proven by using a bunch of fringe opinions is that no, people are not actively discussing this in 2019. I could post a bunch of links from some irrelevant, fringe blogs that swear Trump was actually placed in the presidency by GOD personally and Obama really is a member of Al-Qaeda. Pretty sure that doesn't make it true.

Oh, honey. You said you looked up the thread on Slate and found nothing. From that very thread, Magic Hat: "The rape by omission scene in the original was always a little tough to swallow." You barely have to scroll down to find it. JannaM on the same thread: "He had sex with her under false pretenses. What do you call that?"

So much for your superior research skills...

The  so-called "garbage links" include one to the Village Voice, making it interesting what you're willing to label as "garbage." Odd that you'd also include a feminist blog as being part of the "garbage."

I love denial so thick if a post doesn't come from this year, it can't still represent a concept alive in our culture. All but one of the links I posted is literally from last year. The oldest was from only two years ago. These are not incredibly outdated examples. The culture hasn't shifted that much in two years' time.

I posted the same article twice because one source just reposted content from another site I'd linked--uh, and? I just accidentally linked one article twice. Easy mistake, and not relevant to whether this is an ongoing argument about the picture or not. Doesn't show I didn't read them. I guess if you could point out that none of them make the argument I claim they do, your contention that I didn't read them before linking them might be somehow valid. But...they do. Which I know because...I did read them.

So you can find comments on this topic more easily by looking up articles about the remake, which didn't come out this year. This somehow shows that no one is still making such arguments, holds this position? Not really.  It might suggest the argument is more frequently reiterated whenever the material is reimagined, however. But then logic suggests that the argument would up come again if a musical reimagining the material was produced--the very point I made initially.

Try to avoid posting to throw shade. Think about the validity of your claims. Make more of an effort to research before you put down the research skills of others (scrolling through a short comments section isn't that arduous an endeavor). This is an argument people make. I'm not inventing it. It can be found on mainstream sites as well as anonymous little spaces on the web. That you don't want it to exist...just doesn't stop it from existing.

I didn't say I looked up a thread on Slate. I said pretty clearly I did a search for "Overboard movie" on their site. You didn't post any links to any Slate threads for me to look up and I have no idea who Magic Hat and JannaM are but I'm sure they're as credible as The Paul H's and Scott R's who pop up in my instagram ads telling me these shoes by the company who sponsored the ad are the most comfortable shoes they've ever worn. I could go thru the rest of your tome point by point but you don't seem too connected to the same reality I am and don't seem to comprehend that a few posts from blogs or threads on reddit doesn't mean that this is actively being discussed on social media. Outside of a few months last year when the remake came out which would be expected, you've shown no evidence that this is being discussed on mainstream social media channels. You can have the last word telling me how wrong I am if it's important to you.

" And if I go to Slate and do a search for "Overboard movie", what I get is a link to the review of the movie remake from 2018 and... nothing else."

Your words. So your research skills are so bad, you didn't go to that article and look at the comments? And you criticize the research of others?

"I have no idea who Magic Hat and JannaM are but I'm sure they're as credible as The Paul H's and Scott R's who pop up in my instagram ads telling me these shoes by the company who sponsored the ad are the most comfortable shoes they've ever worn."

So now the goal post is moved from "No one is making these accusations" to "No one I personally consider credible is making these accusations"? This is intellectual fraudulence of the top tier.

I've proved my point: the links I've given show this is an argument brewing in the culture. From mainstream outlets to comments sections on other mainstream sites to personal blogs to Reddit. I You won't accept it. It would be boring to wait for you to get to that point. After all, for you the Village Voice is a "garbage site."

As it is, I've demonstrated that it occurs and that it is ongoing. No point in responding to you from now on, you're just wanting to continue an argument you can't win. Because you can't refute facts. I'm guessing you will keep denying reality though. Even with all those links demonstrating the argument is out there and being made, as I claimed.

The premise itself comes across as very rapey. I can't imagine that working without heavy reworking to the material.

That would be offensive to Italian Americans, however. Basically, the theatre has to turn into a reality show where everyone onstage is just playing themselves and not doing anything offensive. I guess I'd pay to see Alice Ripley just be herself for 2 hours.
