Did anyone here see Steppenwolf Theatre's production of The Grapes of Wrath back in 1990?  If so, what did you think of it?  Have you seen other productions?  Yes, I know there is a Grapes of Wrath opera, but I'm not interested in it.  Thanks for any comments.

A truly moving and unforgettable evening in the theatre. Total silence at the end interrupted by one over excited clapper!

The first row orchestra was empty and just before the play started I moved dead center from a far sided seat. As the play went on the family comes upon a lake and the pit in front of the stage was filled with water, I got a good splash out of that scene. Those in the second row not as bad. It was, like the book a moving and sad story. The production was quality.

The production was stellar.  Many many breathtaking moments.  Also pretty much launched Gary Sinise into stardom.  The scene near the end where they place the dead child in the river was galvanic.  Here's a clip from the 1990 TONY's:

This production was taped for PBS, I think the Great Performances series.  If you can find a copy (I threw mine out because I had it on VHS), you will have some clue as to why the other commenters praised it so highly.

I wish I still had my copy of the PBS broadcast.  It was a terrific production.
