Didn't see a thread for this, but...

Yay!

The Ferryman for Best Play

Tootsie for Best Musical

What the Constitution Means to Me for Best American Play

Wonder if this changes Tootsie's chances for upcoming awards.. What does everyone think?

I’m predicting Tootsie will win all the precursors and best musical at the Tonys with best book and actor and maybe featured actor. I think Hadestown will take score, orchestrations, maybe featured actor or actress, set and lighting design. Basically I think Hadestown will take more awards but not musical.

It is worth nothing that Hadestown was not eligible for this Best Musical award as they considered it when it was first Off Broadway a few years ago.

I still feel strongly that Hadestown will take the Tony.

We'll know more at the OCCs. Just a funny feeling I have.

Very good point. Strange how some groups are considering it eligible and some aren't.

well, folks don't generally see the OCC as a precursor of anything other than a good laugh every so often.

And regarding what "some groups" do, each has their own rules and for the most part those rules include that shows don't get two bites at the apple.

Are all members of the NY Drama Critics part of the Drama Desk voters?

No. It looks like only 5 Drama Critics Circle members are part of the 100+ person Drama Desk voting body. I think there's more overlap between the Drama Critics Circle and the Tonys.

Congrats to Ferryman and Tootsie, whose marketers should get to work asap. Average person has no idea what these awards mean, and are simply attracted by lists and award nominations.

But this has little impact on Tony predictions, no? The two front runners both won (Ferryman and Constitution), and on the musical side, the frontrunner isnt eligible (Hadestown).

Correct. If it happened a week and a half earlier, it would carry more weight going into nominations, but the critics are furiously writing their reviews until the last show of the season opens.

These precursor awards hardly mean anything for the Box Office and Tonys. Back in the day, the NY Drama Critics Circle Award was THE award to win –– it was viewed as a bigger honor than the Tony.

If Tootsie wins best musical, I’ll be very disheartened. Are aspects of it very funny? Yes. Is it a flashy, old-school musical? Yes. Is it the best musical of the year? Absolutely not. It’s fine. It’s by no means a “best” anything.

This.

Tootsie was fun. It was not memorable. It had some great performances and was funny in the moment. The thing that made Dustin Hoffman's performance so great is that we easily forgot it was Dustin playing Dorothy. As much energy as he put into it, I did not once forget Santino was playing Dorothy. I think he'll win still, but I'd really like to see Brooks win for The Prom.

I can't stop talking about HadesTown. In fact, I think it's the best, most complete production since Hamilton. It may even be slightly better for me because of the production values. Considering I was not engaged with the story for the first 45 minutes of HadesTown, it says a lot how much it struck me. I can't wait for the new recording to come out because the concert recording pales in comparison.

I think HadesTown will take score, musical, supporting actor and several design awards.
