Saw Waverly last weekend after seeing the Off Broadway production years ago. (It's different seeing it at age 40 than at age 60...)

I so very much remember a scene in the hallway that served as the climax between Grandmother and Grandson. And then the Grandson spoke to the audience with the line "Well, Grandma had gone to pieces, but the pieces were still Grandma."

I've used that line for decades trying to explain dementia and Alzheimer's to clients. (I practice probate and guardianship law.) But that line isn't in the show now -- and the staging is different for the climax. There is a similar line-- but the 'old one' was just so very perfect.

So the question is -- did they change it (and other things) or is my memory playing tricks on me? And is there anyway to get a copy of the original script AND the new one (assuming changes were made)?

THANKS

mike

The line is "Her mind was smashed to pieces, and the person she used to be hadn't really been around for a long time. . .. But the pieces were still her pieces." It has not been changed, and occurs right before the hallway scene.

Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

That line Smaxie describes is indeed still there. That was the first time I completely lost it. Cue the ugly cry waterworks.

Lonergan claims to have only changed one or two lines in the play –– for the most part, it's word-for-word the same show as in 1999.
