I have been hearing about this benefit reading for a while. So excited about it. I wish the tickets were a little bit cheaper and I wish that Elaine Stritch were still alive to play grandma, but Rita Gardner will be incredible! Loved her in Wedding Singer.
They haven’t announced Bella yet. Any guesses on who it could be? I would say to Benanti or Celia Keenan Bolger but they both have performances on that Sunday.
We need Lost In Yonkers back in New York! It’s always been my favorite play (i love the film too). I wonder if this benefit could turn into a Broadway revival or even an off Broadway commercial run? It has a great cast, minus the mysterious unannounced Bella lol.
I would love to see a revival of this on Broadway or quite frankly any Neil Simon. There was talk of a RUMOURS revival (I never saw that one..) but it would be meaningful if he was remembered after his passing with a Broadway revival of something...
Also, wondering if there was anything sitting in his drawers that never got produced? His drawers meaning in his desk, not his underwear
Vernon, I would absolutely LOVE to look in his drawers too. I also love Rumors! This one on the 9th is a benefit for Neil. Are you going? I’m gonna try to snag a cheaper ticket.
The 2009 Brighton Beach Memoirs was really quite excellent.. Metcalf and Hecht were perfectly cast and the whole thing (to me) worked beautifully. I don’t think I remember hearing anyone saying it was bad, it just sold no tickets.
Oh I thought you guys meant the Off-Broadway revival of Yonkers from a few years back. You meant Brighton Beach.
I’ve always liked Yonkers more as a play than Memoirs (maybe it’s just personal taste as my family reminds me so much of the characters lol). I think that it’s his masterpiece. Is anyone going to this new prouduction on the 9th? I love the cast so far, but I’m waiting for them to announce Bella first. She’s the real star of the show. If it’s a someone good, I’ll try to grab a cheap seat.
It did open and ran for a week. It was supposed to be paired with Broadway Bound which never got up. The production was fine just, as said, they couldn't give away tickets.
