The swings/standbys/understudies of Mean Girls aren't allowed to share in advance when they'll be going on. So it's all a guessing game. Sometimes they'll post little hints on instagram the day of or the day before.

This is becoming a new trend with shows, and I don’t get the purpose or logic behind it.

I agree. Especially with a show like MEAN GIRLS which is sold out regardless of who is in it.

Cameron Mackintosh had a hand in this trend, and other producers have jumped on the bandwagon. He feels that if a principal is going to be out, it needs to be announced by the production, not by the understudy (and it's rarely announced by the production). I think it matters the most when there's a legit star.

It does seem like a way for producers to exert more control over communications -- if they're lenient about understudies sharing when they're going to be on, then that could lead to actors accidentally sharing other, more sensitive information. (Case in point: Hailey Kilgore's insta post about her final performance date in OOTI, which raised questions about the future of the show.)

Also: It's classy when the actor who is going to miss acknowledges it on social media, though they have ZERO obligation to do so. Caissie Levy did it a few times leading up to a scheduled personal day this weekend, and I remember Katharine McPhee being very open about when she was going to be out.

I agree as well. Can somebody explain why shows have been doing this?

I mean, as it relates to Mean Girls, 99% of the people seeing that show couldn’t care less if they see Taylor Lauderman or Tee Boyich, so I guess just don’t understand. Shows with a big star...I get that. But the rest? I’d love an explanation.

I think part of it is that people who have rushed/won the lottery a bunch of times sometimes do that to see a specific person (especially an understudy, in the case of Mean Girls). Tee has a pretty big following in general and people (big fans of the show, or her) would want to go do rush/lottery if they knew she was on.

Pretty big following? The thing is, they don't need to explain this situation at all. If you want to see the show, see the show. If you have connections with specific actors, ask them directly (not that randoms don't inundate their social media accounts with such pettiness).

I agree that it shouldn't matter who is on for what part. Everybody in this company - and everybody in any Broadway company, honestly - is fantastic, and I personally would never be disappointed to see an understudy. But just because that's how it should be doesn't mean that's how it is.

The fact of the matter is that there is a genuine concern that announcing when principals are out could affect ticket sales. These are a few of the sentiments I remember on social media when Taylor announced her vacation (and quickly deleted all mention of said vacation, oops):

  • I'm so relieved I bought tickets for the next week when Taylor will be back.
  • I was just about to buy tickets. Thank goodness I know this information first.
  • Oh, I would love to see Becca/Jonalyn as Regina. Maybe I'll try to buy tickets for that week.
  • Oh no, I'm seeing it that week for my birthday. I really wanted to see Taylor. Maybe I can ask for an exchange?

So yes, as silly as it may seem, this kind of thing does matter to ticket buyers. Whether the people who want to see the full principal cast cancel out with the people who want to see understudies on is debatable. Would I love to be able to plan in advance to see understudies? Of course. (I was indeed one of those people who bought a ticket during Taylor's vacation.) But I can understand why the box office doesn't want to reveal that information up front, and I'm okay with that. For now we either have to buy in advance and get whatever we get, or wait until the last moment and just hope there's rush seats left to see our faves.
