I was at Groundhog Day tonight and during intermission I hear my name being called. I turn and look and it's a woman I met 6 or 7 years ago in the Book of Mormon SRO Line. She is from one of the Carolinas and only comes to NYC a few times a year for a few days. But somehow I always manage to run into her. Does this happen to any of you. It's just weird in a city of millions and tons of tourists I almost always run into this one person, who is super nice, I might add.

Yeah, I definitely end up running into people I've met in rush lines, etc. Happens fairly frequently. Consider that both of you attend theatre with some regularity, so it's not entirely up to chance. It's not like you ran into her at some random bodega uptown.

the story reminds me of Another Hundred People lyrics:

It's a city of strangers, some come to work, some to play.

A city of strangers, some come to stare, some to stay.

And every day some go away

Or they find each other in the crowded streets and the guarded parks,

By the rusty fountains and the dusty trees with the battered barks,

And they walk together past the postered walls with the crude remarks."

Actually, it's funny you mention that. A few times it has been at Bodegas that we run into one another. And tonight was totally random, I got tickets on TDF, not rush line. We also don't follow one another's social media accounts.

Okay, things just got really weird, I live downtown, husband and I are out drinking and some of long time friends that have since moved, 2 different sets of friends, I might add, that we were talking about tonight happen to show up out of the blue. Time to play the lottery I guess.

I've been seated at the same table with a random couple twice at 54 Below. Granted, I believe both were Side Show concerts about a year apart, so that made it slightly more likely to occur.

I have become friends with a girl I first met at stage door at Wicked in Melbourne back in 2009 and then bumped into several times at the theatre. Although she goes to the theatre and the stage door a LOT (she's sweet but a tad on the stalker side) so it wasn't that big a coincidence.

I did sit next to a fellow Melburnian at a concert at Carnegie Hall in September and then a few weeks later saw him at a small theatre concert at home a few weeks later. We both went to the Carnegie Hall show mainly to see a fantastic Aussie musical composer who and he was also at the Melbourne concert as his husband was one of the performers.

I too come at least once a year, and while I've never ran into someone twice, the last time I was in the city, I got to talking to the family behind me, and it turns out that they lived not 2 miles from me in a small town, and it took a rush line in NYC for us to meet. Small world.

One of the things I loved about living in Manhattan was running into people I knew every time I left the house, even if I hadn't seen said friend in weeks or months. I think it happens because people are so crowded together, not just in Manhattan, but in a few specific parts of the island (Upper West Side, Village, Hell's Kitchen, etc.). Also, they tend to be on the street or in public transport.

The biggest shock about moving to LA was realizing that unless I picked up the phone and made a definite date, I wouldn't see friends at all. The city is too spread out and everyone is in a car.
