I'm hoping some of y'all could help me with some musical suggestions! I'm somewhat new to the musical world. I grew up watching musicals on TMC (mainly Judy Garland ones) but don't really know much about newer ones or ones that weren't in recent films, except ones suggested to me on iTunes.
I prefer musicals like Urinetown, A Very Potter Musical, Next To Normal,Dancer In The Dark, The Pirate & 1776
I've seen/listened to more of the popular ones (such as Les Mis, Cats, Wicked & Grease) but they weren't 'for me' I guess? I just couldn't get into them as much as I did others.
Do you know of any that I might like based off of the ones that I mentioned that I do like? Any suggestions are appreciated!
That's an interesting list. The first one that popped into my head was "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown," though I can't say why. I guess because it has more of a pop sound (and it certainly wasn't a mainstream mega-hit).
Grey Gardens - Act two is the very definition of quirky. Ruthless - it's about a child actress gone bad. Quirky, funny and her mother has a big number that is a parody of big Judy Garland numbers. I'll second Batboy.
Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.
Broadway: The Nervous Set, The Utter Glory of Morrissey Hall, The Grass Harp, By Jeeves, Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.
Some off- Broadway possibilities: Little Shop of Horrors, Evil Dead, When Pigs Fly, Das Barbecue, Radio Gals, Eating Raoul, Zombies from the Beyond, The Toxic Avenger, Gutenberg, Adrift in Macao.
Thanks so much for y'alls suggestions! Some of them sound familiar, others I've never heard of. Evil Dead though... as is the horror movie? There's a musical for that? I might be in love!! I've seen that movie about 30 times lol.
Where would be the best place to start listening to them? Are they on youtube, streaming sites or anything like that?
Just so you know, I always buy albums and movies, I just like checking out the music beforehand :)
Quick question though, what do OBC, OBCR & OST mean? I've been looking around on other post & have seem them a few times. Is OBC original broadway cast, OST original soundtrack? Not sure what OBCR could be.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
Credit where it's due, After8's list is pretty great, and Id agree with a lot of it (The Nervous Set!)
Someone mentioned Zombie Prom. While not a favorite, the (I believe) never released 40 minute condensed film version (with RuPaul) is all up on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dECttRgbWW0
One of the quirkiest musicals I saw recently was a Fringe production of Coraline, based on the Neil Gaiman book with music by Stephin Merritt from the Magnetic Fields. It's a very strange score, but suits the show perfectly and the production I saw was perfect (it won Edmonton's Pick of the Fringe.) That said, I still have never bought the cast album, partly due to lack of funds, and partly due to the fact that it's one musical score I'm not sure I would ever play outside of the show's context. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOc3W7KVeZk
