Doug Carter Beane has said repeatedly in interviews that he wanted to cast a guy as the prince who you wouldn't necessarily think of right off the bat. he's supposed to be quirky & a little neurotic. Santino has a really nice voice & it looks like they're all having loads of fun.
Degrassi, to classify Perrault's as the original isn't exactly right either but I do see your point.
Maybe saying she's too beautiful isn't specific enough to my point. There isn't anything unique or interesting about her face. Just your generic princess. I was hoping for someone with at least a slight hint of originality or someone who looks as though they could be cast aside, her beauty in the big reveal should be almost breathtaking in its surprise, IMO. Again, only my opinion.
We can't be talking about Santino Fontana, who provided excellent support in the revival of SUNDAY IN THE PARK, or who gave a blisteringly ferocious performance as Billy's brother in BILLY ELLIOTT. You simply cannot be referring to the actor who dazzled in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, or who gave one of the great performances of the year last year in SONS OF THE PROPHET.
So Laura is too pretty for her role and Santino isn't pretty enough for his?? When did this show become a beauty pageant? Haha I personally think they both look perfectly fine for their roles.
I'm more curious about the book work they did with this. I'm usually pretty divided about Carter Beane's work, let's hope this one is good!

KELLY2 you are quite entitled to your opinion, and beauty is in the eye of the beholdher but as an all american male (not that there is anything wrong with that) i think; as does anyone i talk to; Laura Osnes is one of the prettiest actresses anywhere and certainly with a voice like hers!
I think your argument about casting no-names makes a lot of sense commercially, finebydesign. I guess they are expecting Cinderella's story alone to still be popular enough to secure a good run for the show...

Santino has a great voice...but I felt the same way back when they announced him as Mitch (replacing the very handsome Ivan Hernandez) in YANK, back when that was going to transfer to Broadway.
"The price of love is loss, but still we pay; We love anyway."
'lol carlos! They could have gotten some washed-up boyband boy for this. I just don't get the casting at all.'
And that's what we should strive for?
I truly think the world has gone insane when one of the best young actors around (who also is really quite handsome and charming on stage) is being thrown over for a washed-up boy band boy.
Oh don't get me wrong. I think Santino is a very talented man. He's been very fortunate in his career and I am sure this will be another feather in his "career cap"...I just don't think "Prince Charming" when I see him...and that's not to say that I would prefer a boy band member either. It is what is. Hope the show does well.
I mean, were Stuart Damon and Paolo Montalban really that much more in the gorgeous Prince Charming mold than Santino Fontana?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

FINEBYDESIGN, Kelly Pickler as Cinderella? you'd replace a Tony Nominated Actress with a great voice with a shrill American Idol also ran? good lord i hope youre being sarcastic. In fact you must be, so i apologize
"kadu335 - hold up, you actually think this thing is going to be a "commercial success"?"
No, I don't and I never said It would. I only said that the only reason I could think of for them not casting big names is that they are probably confident the Cinderella "brand" is strong enough to secure a good run. A good run does not equal "commercial success"...
