Yep as long as 2D is readily available, I'm okay with 3D. I just hope if these 3D TVs become a big thing, there will be a way to turn off the 3D (just as closed-captioning can be turned on/off). It would also be nice if the 3D sans glasses technology allows both people who can and cannot see 3D to enjoy watching TV together, without having to switch it to 2D. I want the people I watch TV with to be able to enjoy 3D, even if I can't.

Since I'm blind in one eye, I've been told that I should be able to see a 3D movie in 2D. I just have to wear the 3D glasses, and it will appear like a 2D movie to me. I'm going to try it with The Lion King this week. (I'd rather do it with a movie I've seen already, that way if it looks like crap or I get sick, at least I won't have to worry about seeing the movie again in 2D.) When I go to movies alone, I'm glad there are plenty of 2D times available, but it would be nice to able to attend 3D movies with friends, so they can enjoy the 3D. (Yes we can all go see the 2D version, but I want them to be able to see 3D movies when I'm with them.)

I will never have a 3D TV in my house.
I hear they cause cancer.

OH COME ON!!! Les Mis in 3d is going to rock. You don't know what you will be missing out on! I hear they are adding a few things to make it more "3d" like. Theres a new roller coaster scene where Javert is in the last train, Valjean in the first. Both with swords of course. As they whip and wind through the coaster, Javert continues to pursue by climbing over each train... when they are not inverted or going through a tunnel at 100 mph of course! Then, he reaches Valjean just as the coaster comes to an end. This is when Valjean breaks out in song... singing, "The ride is not yet done!" instead of "My race is not yet run!" Oh this is going to be something to see. You will miss out on this cinematic genius! 3d is the only way!

You know how sometimes a joke is funny if you don't allow it to continue?

I'm not really sure what 3D could bring to Les Miserables, and I'd much rather they focus on producing lovely, painterly images in two dimensions.

A turntable on stage, 3D in the movies (and, as has been said, optional), what's the difference, as long as its good.

Also, while the musical Les Mis might appear to many to not benefit from 3D, the historical epic Les Mis (and the musical is still based on the historical epic, and the movie may well open itself up to being more of the historical epic than the show was - maybe even to including Hugo's long Waterloo chapter), 3d may not be nearly the vulgar choice for viewing it might first seem to some, especially if its remembered that Les Mis is, at times, a rousing action piece as well, a story of revolution.

At least when they put out every movie in 3D, the glasses were free. Naturally we charge for them. This is the Hollywood equivalent of a facility fee

Back in 1970, the USSR Pavillion @ Expo 70 in Japan had 3 D without glasses. The new 3D nintendo has a great 3D effect without glasses. As long as Hollywood can get suckers to pay for rental of the glasses we will always have them.

There was an article on this very topic on Slate recently, I've put the link below.

Basically it points out that 3D is on a VERY steep decline as far as revenue goes and frankly I'm one of those who hopes the fad will die. I can count on one hand the number of films that have used 3D to its fullest extent and actually benefited the story in some way by having it.

The large majority of films that are 3D are fakes, just converted later, simply to get an extra buck. I'm sure one angle Hollywood was hoping was the death of piracy but as we all know, that did not happen. Personally when I see 3D I want there to be stuff popping out at me, the whole argument for subtle uses of it is pointless. This is film, if you need 3D to provide optical depth to make you feel like you're more involved in the film, then step out of the theater and go outside. While I love good cinematography, the focus should be more so on the story and the characters otherwise you should go to an art gallery and look at pretty pictures all day.

There is no reason Les Miz could have for employing 3D at all. If you want atmosphere, shooting in HD would give it a very gritty, real feel to it, kind of what the format did for Public Enemies. Most of it takes place in the slums of France after all!

I was just about to post a similar comment as above. 3D is not doing well at the cinema/theatre, many of the films to use it have failed (My Soul to Take, Shark Night, FD5) and are adding little to the experience. I think this fad will be over before Les Mis comes out

The "3D without glasses"-technology already exists and some of those tv-sets are already being sold in Japan.

Personally I really don't care much for 3D. It's a nice gadget. Many films available in 3D are actually shot in 2D and then manipulated into 3D (as stated before)

As for Les Mis in 3D ? I hope they spend that money on a good orchestra.
