I have great respect for him, but I'm shocked he doesn't understand just how every one of those marriages rips away at inequalities' lifeline. That the battle for interracial marriage was won state by state until the Supreme Court was able to squash that inequality once and for all.
It's coming. I don't mind him yelling for it. But don't piss on us happy couples. Smile for a change, dammit.
I think he's horrifically wrong about what gay marriage in NY means. That said, I don't think he gives a flying eff what any of us thinks - he wants to be as acerbic and abrasive as possible in pushing us towards full national marriage equality.
Is he right on this issue? In my mind, 100% not. But would the general fight be advanced by one of our earliest radicals cheering baby steps? I don't really think so.

Gay marriage could become legal across the country tomorrow and Larry would still find a way to spin it negatively.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
Larry Kramer isn't the only person to live this way--probably far from it--but when he calls what's happening in New York "feel-good marriages" and "an embarrassment," he's discounting the 1300+ rights that newly married gay couples have in the state, and he's making a mockery of what many other activists fought tirelessly for. In his mind, he's the lone gay activist out spreading the word.

Discounting good things? Larry? When I saw the Normal Heart revival I was surprised that some of the good things that happened in those worst of times were included in the text (biggest gay-related fundraiser in history; extraordinary number of volunteers signing up for the new organization) but not at all surprised that the Ned Weeks character barely acknowledges the importance of those two things, (and how it would shape the gay movement for 10 years) before screaming "NOBODY IS DOING ANYTHING!!!!"
I feel bad that you think you're happy, JRB. Larry will set you, um, straight.
larry recognizes that these marriages shred the fabric of society, cause toddler obesity, fund halliburton, drive hummers (no pun intended...ok, maybe a little bit of pun), launch drone strikes in peaceful pakistani villages full of people who want only love, contribute to the deficit and make congress unable to compromise on a debt deal.
i hope you people can sleep at night!

Papa, you are always the voice of reason. That's why I am single. Well, that and because I'm saving myself for you. Let me know when your divorce comes through.
If we'd voted for McCain, none of this would be happening! At least we've got Obama, who fully supports full equality for gay people.
Oh, yeah, right, forgot.

Larry's statement was taken out of context. When I read his words in their entirety, I felt that he's completely correct. I'm married and it was an amazing day, but my husband and I do not have the same rights as hetero couples. Not even close. So let's be joyful, but there's still a lot of work to be done.
If I'm going to sit back and be pacified when I still have unequal status, then, yeah I should be embarrassed. I get Larry's anger and why he gets in people's faces - especially gay people's faces. It wasn't enough to say AIDS kills because people are careless when they're horny. A few years ago, when I was single (and slutty), I can't tell you how many times I had to explain why I wouldn't bareback. I felt like a PSA. People are also careless when they're happy. I enjoyed my honeymoon, the wedding cake, the gifts and all that but at the end of the party, the fight was and is far from over. That's all he's trying to say - in his boorish manner.
