Posted: 8/10/10 at 2:12amAnyone know of some really cheap places to stay in NYC? Something with a private room, not so much as a dorm type of hostel. Thanks all! :)
I am a bagel on a plateful of onion rolls. If you know what I'm talking about, good. If you don't, you're on your own!

Posted: 8/10/10 at 3:03amThere is a place that is...hostel-ish called Ye Olde Carlton Arms. It is pretty cheap, you have your own room with the choice of having a private or public restroom. You have to take the subway to get to Broadway but it is very close. I stay there everytime I go to NYC.

Posted: 8/10/10 at 9:14amAlso look on craigslist to find people renting out their apartments for a week or two. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than a hotel and can also save you money since theres a kitchen so you don't have to eat out every meal.

I think it depends on the place. Some I believe do have age rules, while some don't. But, I don't think anyone would notice or care if you were in a private room.
I've stayed at the Chelsea Star Hotel down on 30th St. at 8th Ave. the last couple of times. It was $79 for a single room when I went. It books very quickly though.

Just an FYI But New York is now going to legislate against apt rentals for less than 30 days. I think this sucks bigtime.

I've stayed at the Fresh Hotel and Hostel and have no complaints. Chose a single room, as opposed to staying in the dorm bunks. This place is kind of far away from the theater district (95th Street and West End, I believe), but it is ridiculously close to a subway station (a 2 minute walk, tops). The staff is also really friendly and helpful. As an example, they don't tell you on Expedia (or anywhere else) that the check-in time is 3PM. So I requested an early check-in since I had a show that day, but apparently no one got the message. So no rooms were ready yet when I showed up bright and early at 8AM. The front-desk person made a few calls, told me to wait five minutes or so, and then handed me keys to my room with a smile. I would definitely stay there again.
I have a question for those who have tried the dorm-bunk situation at other hostels. What is this like? I've always wanted to try it, as it's soooo ridiculously cheap (around $300 for a week's stay, as opposed to $900). Yet I always stop myself from doing it because I'm afraid of what rooming with a bunch of strangers might entail. Anyone have any good (or even horror) stories?

Posted: 8/10/10 at 5:05pmYeah, I'd recommend the Big Apple hostel. I did the shared room once (awkward, but not terrible) and the private room twice. People were polite, location was perfect for a theatre heavy trip. It didn't smell great, but it was clean in all the important ways.

mormonphobic-I've done the dorm rooms a few times. It actually isn't that bad, but it probably varies by place. The first time I did it was strange because I never met anyone in my room because we were in and out at different times, and they were all in bed by the time I got in for the night. But, I was only there overnight, so that probably made a difference as well.
The only real issue I had was when I stayed for 3 nights and it started to smell like bo on the last day. So, take into consideration that you might end up with some foreigners who do things differently.

Chelsea Hostel seems reasonable enough...
I am planning on staying for a week to see Evita, Newsies, Ghost, Chaplain, Sister Act, Rent, Fantastiks and maybe some other ones for matinees. Where is my best bet for rushes and discounted tix in sept.?

Has anyone stayed at Chelsea Lodge (18 West 20th Street)? $134 for single occupancy (+$10 for double). Averaged 4 out of 5 stars from over 350 reviews on tripadvisor. Rooms have private showers but bathroom is shared by others on same floor. Not a big place, 22 total guests at a time.
