Damn, Mr. Riedel sure had his morning coffee and donut before he wrote that article. I mean he was bordering on sounding like a CMIYC fanboy lol. Still, great to actually get some interesting AND positive news from his article. And, how can you not like Marc Shaiman? That video had me cracking up...and thoroughly entertained. Things are most certainly looking up for this show IMO.

The revamping wasn't easy. Yorkey and Shaiman, a couple of hefty guys, bumped bellies a few times, sources say. But success in the theater often turns "Fatty!" into "Darling!" and now everybody involved with "Catch Me" is holding hands and singing songs and going to the gym.
^ Like I said that Reidel is really catty. He makes his living CRITICIZING and standing in judgement of others. In my humble opinion a job I wouldn't want in a million years.
i love this message board. "cmiyc is looking like a hit"? have you seen it? how many tix has it sold..how many tony noms has it gotten? whats the advance like..what does the set look like? from one gossip column its now looking like a "hit"? come on. let's at least wait till they have their blocking.
I'm thinking there was a bad edit or a simple errorneous "delete key" hit.
The show, which will star Norbert Leo Butz (insert the right character's name and then Aaron Tviet's nams) as the notorious real-life con man Frank Abagnale Jr., will open on Broadway in the spring. It's being directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.
I also didn't think he was being rude with the fat cat remarks as it's a common phrase to discuss succeess/power etc.
I hope that he's right in his assessment in the show as I'm really looking forward to it and I'm incredibly tired of being disappointed in productions!
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Geez, he really must hate In The Heights if he wants it to close that bad!

I don't think he really hates In The Heights. He probably more or less thinks it has pretty much run its course. It had a nice run (not sure if it recouped or not...guessing it did), won some Tonys but is now resorting to what some may call stunt casting, with the hires of first Corbin Bleu and now, Jordin Sparks.

Riedel, when chirpy, is just plain embarrassing. It's a stupid column. In a different mood (or without payola from the publicist) he would dismiss the score as "Sammy Davis Jr. pastiche," but here he lauds it for being derivative. He gets the casting wrong, and makes up a ridiculous line about investors reaching for checkbooks (a cliché that was out of date 40 years ago). And then the runty closet queen calls Shaiman and Yorkey fat.
That said, I hold hopes, as for all new projects, that the show will be good.
Having seen the show, the main problem I had with it was variety show framework, which seemed to drift in and out of existence. That and the inane sing along. Otherwise, it's a solid show.
Some of you are obnoxious, wishing a show would close because *you* don't care for it. As if the world revolved around *your* likes and dislikes. Get real.
All gossip columnists get payola. They certainly can't live on the $15,000 a year a gossip column pays. Not even if they also get the $15 an episode Riedel gets for his public access theatre chat show.
(Note: do not take the above numbers literally; as you may have guessed, hyperbole is being used for entertainment purposes.)
If they focus the story on Frank Jr. and stop forcing making Leo Butz's character equal like in the movie, then this show could definitely work. Unfortunately, a lot of the detective's numbers didn't really move the story along and while crowd pleasers, slowed the pace of the show.

No I really don't think he likes that show. Not just the fact that he referred to it as dopey but also, he, like most critics who still had voting rights, wanted Passing Strange to win the Tony for Best Musical.
