Good. I liked the revival but that costume nomination was undeserved, since they used the same costumes as the original production.
"You drank a charm to kill John Proctor's wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" - Betty Parris to Abigail Williams in Arthur Miller's The Crucible
Okay here's what I think happened (a complete guess, but it makes a nice theory, I think):
The nominators at all costs didn't want to give a nomination to Addams Family in this category (as it would have won, likely). I thought the costumes were the most successful part of that production (and if the puppets are included in that design, moreso). When they saw that Ragtime slid in, they had to realize the costumes were the same, they thought this would be a perfect F.U. to the producers of Addams.
A CONSIPIRACY to keep Addams family from getting a WIN?
REALLY?? Oy.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
Its a shame that no replacement nominee will be added to the ballot. in a season of so many worthy nominees (in this field) a mistake by the nominating committee shouldn't keep a deserving candidate from being included.
Absolutely- it was a "F-You" to Addams Family. If they would have nominated it, it would have won. Of course you could say that about Best Musical, too. I call it the "Aida" effect.
I wouldn't go so far as to use the word conspiracy, but the omission was very intentional. I think they were snubbed in several places. Best Musical, Best Actor, Best Features Actress (Carolee), and the omitted design noms. I think the nominating committee knows that the voters are now mostly people who have money to gain/lose from these awards, and want to prevent Addams from sweeping because it will do well on the road.
These nominations are such a joke sometime. Just nominate the worthy contenders. Was there really any need for La Cage to get every single design nomination? I do not think they were all deserved. That must have been another way of keeping Addams out. Updated On: 5/13/10 at 06:32 PM
perfect reason why i don't buy into any of this award show crap. it's all fixed and rigged. total bvllsh!t...always was and always will be. that's why i like what i like regardless of how many awards it won or not. Updated On: 5/13/10 at 07:02 PM
I also think some of the Ragtime nominations were a way ofsticking it to Promises. I actually really liked the costumes for Promises. Katie Finnerans jacket alone warrants a nomination.
Some of the noms really are ridiculous. How could a mistake like this happen and persist for so long?? Makes no sense. A certain committee needs a kick in the arse to get its act together.
The Drama Desk should also pull the nomination for Ragtime's orchestrations. They are the original orchestrations, and they won the Drama Desk in 1998! Totally puzzling.
You see, now they're just throwing names into the ring without any kind of knowledge or consideration because if they had recycled material wouldn't be re-nominated. Like I said: TOTAL CA-CA.
