That's ridiculous. No one is friends with Kerry Butler.

The video of Kerry singing Fly Fly Away used to allow comments. When the comments were less than positive towards Ms. Butler, Craig hastily deleted them, and locked the thread from further comments.

It was pretty abusive and awful. The videoclip, not the deleted thread re: Glad to see the BWW Gestapo is alive and well!

This had nothing at all to do with that, this was a simple dissagreement between the creators and the theatre about length and amount of clips to put on the Internet. Some of us hate this nutty new world of "spoilers" and did not want this moment presented in this way.

I would really, really appreciate it if Craig and Robert were simply respected for caring enough about how creators of material felt, even if it gives them a theoretical journalisitc black eye. This is not United States Foreign Policy, it is a clip from an out-of-town musical.

I truly thank Craig & Robert for their sensitivity.

LOL I hear it was ecstatically received by Seattle! Good job. You are never going to try out a show in Chicago!

If they didn't have a history of deleting threads for no reason it might be easier to take you at your request.

Point taken, Marc.

And I seriously am wishing you all well - it can't be easy with the recent events that HAVE to have affected this production.

Exactly, particularly when it comes to Kerry Butler.

I think the conflict of interest is that Craig (who means well, I'm sure) operates Kerry's website.

The juxtaposition between that and the unique coverage she seems to get on BWW when in the position to enjoy such a thing is what's being called into question.

I find that criticism entirely fair.

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

BWW FAQ NO. 48 - Can I post my thoughts on Kerry Butler?

Absolutely, as long as it to praise or worship her. All other threads will be deleted.

Bottom line, you can trash anyone but her. Or anything that relates to her. Or start a site of your own.

I understand removing the video, but deleting the comments is a little suspicious. Unless they get automatically removed when you lock a thread, but my own moderating history tells me that is not likely.

1) I love Kerry Butler and she is incredibly talented.

2) I haven't seen the clip nor read the deleted comments, but I do want to mention that several posters here can be awfully cruel. Unnecessarily cruel. There is a difference between criticism and cruelty. Don't know if this applies to the deleted comments from the thread, but I have witnessed such comments in the past. And such comments in the past have caused threads to be deleted, too.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

NO ONE was cruel towards Kerry in the thread. It was more constructive criticism than anything.

When it opens on Broadway and spoilers are no longer an issue, will people finally be allowed to post their reactions to the performance?

There was nothing unnecessarily cruel about any of the comments in the thread. My own comment in its entirety was, "Her diction is terrible." That was it. Nothing else was any worse than that. People have said far, far worse things about other performers on this board, and not a thing was done.

Unnecessarily cruel is repeatedly referring to Orfeh as a man. It took Orfeh herself posting on the board for those "unnecessarily cruel" comments about her to stop. Those posts were never deleted, and they still aren't.

The point is, when it comes to Kerry Butler on this site, the moment anything remotely critical of her is posted, it's usually quickly deleted. Other performers have had to deal with far, far worse criticism on the boards, yet nothing gets done. Only when it comes to Kerry.

The clip was terrible and didn't do Kerry or the show any favors. I don't blame the creative team for not wanting that footage to get out.

I love Kerry Butler. I didn't see the clip. I didn't see any comments. But still I know in my heart of hearts that "Gestapo" is entirely the wrong analogy.

Did you not want to spoil that the song, performance, and show itself are problematic and troubled?

Hey everyone. Hey especially to the people who think they are so witty, smart and clever. Guess what? I haven't been online since I posted the clip and the thread. I've been out enjoying a nice dinner with some friends. I mention this because it appears from this thread that a few of you think there's some hidden agenda going on. That I didn't like comments made about the video. What's really funny is that I didn't even see the comments - nor do I care what they were. Rob, Marc and I were emailing back and forth about the clip and the decision was made to pull it. So it was pulled. One of the many moderators here assisted by editing my original post to reflect the change and cleared the thread/locked it to avoid confusion as to why the video was no longer available.

Kerry doesn't get preferential coverage on this site - believe me - if anything - the opposite. But that really doesn't matter, does it?

AdamGreer - I don't know what your issue is - but get over yourself. You have no clue as to what you are talking about regarding Orfeh, Kerry, Me or anything else regarding how this site operates so you can avoid looking ignorant by avoiding such ridiculous accusations.

The clip was posted. We were asked if we would take it down. We complied. That's the entire "conspiracy."
