Proshot of Slave Play? I actually see this happening especially since it's coming back as a limited engagement and into the AW.

I wish we had an Oklahoma! proshot/limited engagement though.

When I first saw that they’re doing the remount without Kulakango, my first thought was that they’d bring Teyonah Parris back to reprise her role. She played this role Off-Broadway, and in the intervening time, she became a Marvel star. She’s a much more marketable name now than she was before, so if she was onboard, that would be a safer bet from an investment standpoint. If that had been the case, all of this would’ve been clarified a lot more.

…but nope. Not what’s happening. I agree it’s surprising given their pre-pandemic box office numbers.

I fall somewhere in between on the whole Jeremy O. Harris debate. I’ve seen 3 of his plays now, and I think his work is interesting, with an impressive visceral impact, but not actually that great. In general I think he’s shaking up the theatre world in a way that’s interesting to observe, and I think in the grand scheme of things he is probably a net positive force in the theatre community. But I’ve definitely disagreed with some of his takes, and some of his reactions to things, and I can see why he rubs some the wrong way.

He reminds me a bit of Lin-Manuel Miranda in the way that he’s been trying to spin his auteur theatrical achievements into more mainstream fame. It can come across as shallow and egocentric, but in the end, it’s kind of impressive that we can get these figures to break through and shine a spotlight on the theatrical world. But I agree there are playwrights more deserving of that attention than him.

I think it's exciting this is coming back, especially since I missed it the first time.

 

As for Harris...the verdict is still out whether he's a Great Playwright but I kind of like the idea of a playwright who is an extrovert and not some nebbishy nerd who hovers in the background.  He also appears to be reasonably dedicated to the stage and not interested in selling out to write for BILLIONS or something.

Right? If you want to see a certain type of play on Broadway, and it’s not there, then get your little pen and paper and word processing program out and write what you want to see!

Getting a play to even be seen by the people who *might* consider helping take it to Broadway is a near Herculean task that requires a great deal of money, connections, timing, and luck.

Said this in the thread for THE INHERITANCE, but I would love for there to be an audiobook version, similar to how the recent National Theatre revival of ANGELS IN AMERICA was recorded with the Broadway cast.

This announcement and the Tonys last night has me wondering:

Can anyone who saw both compare and contrast Kalukango and Parris's performances? I saw Parris at NYTW but never got around to seeing this at the Golden. I'm curious about the differences if anyone can remember them.

Sweet Jacob, I love the audio recording of Angels in America, it's just wonderful. When I travel long distances or even cleaning around the house, I have enjoyed listening so much. And much to my delight, I got to see it again when the National Theatre released it for streaming. Granted, a few actors were different but it was such a treat to view it and listen whenever I'd like.

I think that sounds like a wonderful idea, honestly. The Inheritance is beautifully written and I'm so proud of their accomplishments around the world with this work of art.

Sorry I can't actually answer your question, because I only saw Parris. But I will say:

From what I gather, it sounds like Kulakango was superior in the role. I have a couple of friends who saw both and felt that way. Plus, I didn’t feel like anyone was really talking about Parris’ performance Off-Broadway. I thought she was perfectly good, but I didn’t walk away from the show thinking “wow! What a performance!” She was just another member of this ensemble, albeit with a slightly larger role because of the final act, but otherwise not a big standout compared to the rest of the cast. By contrast, it seems like people were really, passionately excited by Kulakango’s performance on Broadway, in a way that surprised me when I first started hearing that she was a major stand-out.

That wasnt even the worst of it- he said Slave Play changed the world.
