And don't forget Blythe Danner was also nominated as a Leading Actress for playing Phyllis. I think Phyllis can be a leading role, it certainly was in the Encores! production due to Murphy's stunning performance. From the soundboard of the original production it is also clear that Alexis Smith brought a certain quality to Phyllis that made the role as significant as Sally, IMO. However, I think depending on the director and the actress, the Sally-Ben storyline could have a stronger focus and Phyllis could be played as a supporting role. Either way if FOLLIES were to transfer at all, Murphy would indeed be considered leading...and would kick some ass come Tony night
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
I have not seen Ms. LuPone in Gypsy yet, but if Follies should transfer (and if I were a Tony voter), Murphy wouldn't even get my vote. Victoria Clark would.
To paraphrase my grandmother, "It's never too early to start a Tony thread."
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae
Vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra
Salve, Salve Regina
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Eva
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
O clemens O pia
Okay, I've been pm'ed that this thread was indeed meant as a joke.
And americanboy, I heartily disagree. I believe that if this GYPSY had been a full production this past year, Ebersole would have not had a chance in East Hampton.

And do remember. While Edith/Little Edie are amazing roles for one actress. Mama Rose is considered the greatest female role of all time. She takes the cake, Mama.
What does that have to do with LuPone/Ebersole? I've seen both performances - Ebersole twice - and I don't think she would have been competition for LuPone here.
THIS is what legendary performances are made of.
