Finally saw it. Amazing.
Marion Colliard was fantastic.

And if you don't know Piaf, 30th Anniversaire is a great collection of her work. Absolutely wonderful.

If you see one film this year let it be La Vie En Rose.
Two and a half hours flew by. I never thought of the time. I wanted to sit there and see it again right away. Hollywood, take a good look at this film!

I saw this last week and loved it. A friend and I were in the mood to see a foreign film and stumbles into the theatre by chance. I was definitely not expected to be blown away like that! I have been listening to her music all week.

Adding my rave. This is a wonderful movie, if a not just a tad long, but what movie isn't nowadays.

Can't wait to see this! It could be nominated for a regular Best Picture Oscar, doubt it will, but it could.

I agree, PJ. The movie really hits you after you leave the theatre. The best performance I have seen all year so far. Is Marion eligible for an Oscar nod? She broke my heart and I sobbed all through the final minutes of the film.

I was very impressed by this film also. I was wondering why they completely left out her participation in the French Resistance, not even a token mention. I found the jumping around in time to be a bit distracting, but I trust it will make more sense with repeat viewings.

And Mme Cotard was extraordinary. A sure Oscar nomination there.

Absolutely adored this movie. Marion Cotillard is absolutely phenomenal. I think her portrayal of adult and older Piaf are the most effective, because younger Edith is written a bit caricature-esque. The film was beautiful and so moving. I was in tears by the end. The entire Marcel scene was so heartbreaking. Marion needs to get the recognition she deserves.

I wish amazing foreign films like this got more recognition. I only knew about this through my French teacher, and because I was interested in Marion from seeing Jeux d'Enfants(Love Me If You Dare). There's was little Sneak Peek on HBO OnDemand, and it was the first time she performed at Gerard Depardieu's place, but that was all. So disappointing.

I'll be the voice of dissent here and say that I found it to be an unfocused and rather paint-by-numbers biopic that never really found a center of gravity. Also, quite a lot of the movie's facts are highly questionable, and it left me to wonder why they put certain things in and left certain other aspects of her life out (ie, her part in the Resistance, as Roscoe mentioned). Marion Cotillard, however, was brilliant; she truly WAS Piaf.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

AC, I kind of agree with you. I found the film sometimes hard to follow, but this unfocussed jumping around kind of film will usually reveal their secrets upon repeat viewings. I know I felt that way about Mike Leigh's TOPSY TURVY, which just seemed to have no organization to it at all. Then I happened to see it several times when it was on HBO, and it gradually made sense.

I'd like to know what a real Piaf fan thinks of the film, but the fact that it was well-received in France, where Piaf is a national deity, would bode well, I think.

I honestly loved the jumping around and had no trouble making sense of it. It was one of the easier to follow jump around films I've seen. I also loved how flashbacks were not previously seen footage. The scene from Marcel's death to the stage was one of the most moving and stunningly artistic works of art I've ever witnessed.

Truly, one of the most extraordinary performances EVER captured on film. Her performance is beyond brilliant!!

As far as I'm concerned.......and, everyone who has seen the film, they don't even need to have the Best Actress Category at the Oscars next year. SHE'S GOT IT!!!

The scene of Marcell's death was shocking........brilliant.......heartbreaking......... The entire audience gasped when the plane crashed.

The scene with Marlene Dietrich was so moving. Marlene is so moved by her singing and tells her how wonderful she is. Edith is so blown away to meet her....doesn't say a word.....with the camera on her face.......all of her emotions are right there......and, she didn't say 1 word.

Yes! Brilliant!
I loved so many of the director's choices too:
From Marcel's death to .....
Flashbacks...
Titine/the doll...
Piaf's first performance.....

Tetine and the doll was so moving.....

And, it made it even more tragic when you find out at the end of the film, that she had a little girl. That came as a shock.

What a sad, sad life she had. An extraordinary talent!

I just purchased the DVD and watched it last night with some friends. I was sad to discover that they omitted the lyric translation subtitles during the closing "Non, Je Ne Regret Rien." The lyrics are so key to the theme of the film and work so well with the ending montage.

It lost it's punch for those unfamiliar with the song and those who are not Piaf fans (some of my friends.) I really wish they had kept the lyric subtitles as it was presented in the theatre. The audience was bawling at the theatre.

I finally saw this film and can't say enough about Cotillard's incredible performance. I did have some problems with the structure and the facts, but everything else is almost perfect. See this film if you haven't.

My favorite movie of the year! Marion Cotillard is completely brillant in it in every aspect. Everything about it-the costumes, the cinametography and sets where beautiful and appropriate to the scene. I really enjoyed how her boyfriend's death was portrayed as well. Due to this film, I have become a huge Piaf fan and become more and more facinated by her.

Happy...Everything! Kaye Thompson
