Yes La Chanze did play TiMoune in Once On This Island. If she was in fact nominated for featured actress instead of leading actress my guess would be that although her role is the largest female role in the show, it is still considered "featured". I don't know how they determine if the role is featured or leading but that show is very much an ensemble show. I can see how she was nominated in the featured category. I would think that any role in that show would be "featured" as opposed to leading. Just my opinion.....I could be wrong

Just to name a few: Ken Jennings and Merle Louise for their featured roles in the original "Sweeney Todd," Bernadette Peters in the original "Into the Woods" and Judy Kaye in "Ragtime."

Why LaChanze was not nominated for Best Leading Actress:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if your name does not appear above the title, you are automatically considered a featured actor or actress. The producers then need to petition for you to be considered leading. Considering that Lea Solonga was giving such an immense performance (and was the clear cut winner), I think the producers made the correct choice, never imagining the sublime LaChanze would lose to an 11-year-old. But lose she did.

Hunter Foster - Urinetown (And of course I agree that Jeff McCarthy should have had a nomination, as well.)
Raul Esparza - The Rocky Horror Show
Sandra Allen - Flower Drum Song

robbiej - Not to mention the fact that the 11 year-old girl also played the central character in her show as well. Both of them should have been nominated as leads.

I also agree with Janine LaManna and James Barbour. Also Betty Buckley and Linzi Hately for Carrie, Stephan Bogardus for Falsettos and Mary Stout for Jane Eyre.

Well, that doesn't surprise me. Why would Tony voters take their job seriously or show integrity? Generally, half of them can't be bothered to see the nominated shows - only the most popular ones.
