Allison Janey can't play Joanne. The character makes fun of Bobby's girlfriends for being "tall enough to be his mother" - She's over six feet herself.
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
I somehow doubt Sondheim suggested "boring" as an alternate lyric....
Other women I'd love to see play Joanne in a movie version: Michelle Pfeiffer, Tilda Swinton, but I still think Cate Blanchett has the right acerbic class for the role (and it wouldn't be grotesque when the character comes on to Bobby in the night club)
“I knew who I was this morning, but I've changed a few times since then.”
You're right Carlos. I didn't see the revival twice with Raul and have never seen it several other times in smaller community productions. If you don't think Allison Janney brings the perfect level of upper class sarcastic sexiness that the part requires, then you're crazy.
To be fair barcelona20, you did imply that you cannot see Jake Gyllenhal as Bobby because he was too attractive. I mean, if that's not inability to understand the material, I don't know what is.
Caption: Every so often there was a rare moment of perfect balance when I soared above him.

Then I'm crazy because I don't think she exudes what's needed for the part....and if you've seen that many productions of Company and after all that still determined that the character of Bobby has problems getting women and you feel that Jake Gyllenhaal is the wrong choice for the role because of that then YOU were not paying attention.
