Rep Stage to Honor Black History Month with HOME, 2/27-3/17

Rep Stage, the professional Equity theatre in residence at Howard Community College (HCC), continues its 20th anniversary season with 'Home,' Samm-Art Williams' brilliantly inventive, lyrically expressive play that tells the coming-of-age story of a young black man, Cephus Miles, from rural North Carolina. From beginning to end - and through tragedy and triumph - Cephus never loses his joyful goodwill, his indomitable spirit, and the conviction that one day his quest for fulfillment with be rewarded. 'Home' stars returning Rep Stage actors Felicia Curry and Fatima Quander, as well as Rep newcomer Robert Lee Hardy in the role of Cephus Miles.
Way Off Broadway is Workin 9 TO 5, 3/22-6/1

The Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre's 2013 Season is the year Broadway and Hollywood meet with all of the productions at the theatre being hits both on the silver screen and New York stage. Following its 2013 Season-opener, Steel Magnolias, Way Off Broadway will produce the regional theatre premiere of the musical comedy 9 to 5 beginning March 22nd.

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) invites families to uncover the African origins of jazz, blues and beyond on Saturday, March 2 at 11 a.m. at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. Musical Roots: From Africa to America, led by Maestro Damon Gupton, will bring new life to jazz, blues and ragtime standards through exciting performances by Baltimore-based beatboxer Shodekeh, pianist Eric Conway, Baltimore City College Choir, tapmaster Karen Callaway Williams and OrchKids. However, the February meeting of The Baltimore Playwrights Festival will happen as scheduled at 7:30, Tuesday, February 19th, at FPCT.

While the musical production-a collaborative effort between the Strand Theater Co. and StillPointe Theatre Initiative-tackles such weighty issues as racism, sexism, feminism and even terrorism, it is by no means a somber performance; to the contrary, it is jubilant, joyous, soulful and energizing, and the enormous (at least for this space), 12-actor cast shakes, shimmies and grooves along to the music of a five-piece live band through Childs' delightful lyrics and hilarious script, reminding us (and perhaps reminding herself) not to take things too seriously.

The Baltimore Playwrights Festival announces its monthly public meeting to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at Fells Point Corner Theater, 251 South Ann Street, Baltimore, MD 21231, 410-276-7837. After the meeting, at 8:30 p.m., there will be a staged reading of The Desert, a one-act play by Jacquelyn Bengfort, followed by a discussion of the script with the playwright, director and actors. Both the meeting and the reading are free, and the general public and all BPF members are encouraged to attend.

In August 2012, one line from one play changed Ugandan history. "I'm gay" was uttered by the main character from The River and the Mountain, making it the first Ugandan play ever to have an openly gay character. Due to this the producer of the play, David Cecil, was arrested for offending the Ministry of Ethics in Uganda.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Appoints John T. Verdon as New CFO

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has appointed John T. Verdon as its new vice president and chief financial officer, a position he will start on February 11, 2013. Mr. Verdon has held leadership positions in a range of industries. Most recently, he served as CFO for Integrated Systems Analysts, Inc., a Northern Virginia-based firm that specializes in computer systems and solutions. Mr. Verdon's expertise as a Certified Public Accountant and more than 30 years of experience will aid BSO President and CEO Paul Meecham and the BSO board in their efforts to achieve the BSO's strategic vision: to prosper artistically within a sustainably balanced budget.

Strand Theater Company joins forces with StillPointe Theater Initiative to co-produce The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin - an Obie Award-Winning, autobiographical, 'smartly sweet' musical about a woman named Bubbly learning to embrace her color, as she pursues a dream of becoming the greatest dancing star in the world. Directed by Ryan Haase. The production will begin with Previews tonight, February 8-14, will officially open on February 15, and run through February 23.

Children's Playhouse of Maryland Triumphs at National Junior Theater Festival

The Children's Playhouse of Maryland, in residence at CCBC Essex, garnered two major awards at this year's invitational Junior Theater Festival. CPM's production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr. captured the prestigious Freddy Gershon Award for Excellence in Music. Jamie Watson of Baltimore, (pictured left) as the Sea Witch Ursula, won the coveted Outstanding Female Performer award. Brad Bowers of Towson and Jamie Watson were named Festival Performing All Stars and Nick Logue of Essex and Tony Steiner of Baltimore were named Festival Technical Theatre All Stars.
