Tacoma Musical Playhouse is thrilled to open our 19th season of award-winning musical theater with the long-awaited, much-anticipated TMP production of Chicago!

Only decades after his death in 1925 was French composer Erik Satie hailed as a genius of contemporary classical music. His work was extremely simple in structure, yet innovative and marked by a characteristic wryness and wit. His reliance on unusual harmonic configurations was a reaction against the heavy, symbol-rich music of his era, a time when the works of Romantic European composers like Richard Wagner were still very much in vogue, and the highly decorated Impressionism of his friend, Claude Debussy, was ascendant. Satie left a relatively scarce body of work behind, most of it written for the piano. But his groundbreaking use of bitonal or polytonal notes and "broken" rhythms would become a benchmark of twentieth-century modernist music.

Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe winning actor Beau Bridges will be honored with the inaugural Betty Garrett Lifetime Achievement Award at the 50th Anniversary Gala of Theatre West, September 13th at the Taglyan Cultural Complex in Hollywood. Founded in 1962, Theatre West, an internationally acclaimed non-profit arts organization, is home to the oldest continuously running theater company in Los Angeles. Dedicated to supporting artists and enriching the community, Theatre West provides world class theater presentations for adults, a professional children's theatre and much needed arts education programs in underserved city schools. In its ongoing efforts to combat bullying, the hit Broadway musical WICKED will host a special event on Thursday, October 11, featuring two leaders in the worldwide campaign to bring an end to bullying: Ben Cohen, MBE, founder of The Ben Cohen StandUp Foundation, and Dan Savage, co-founder of The It Gets Better Project. Mr. Cohen and Mr. Savage will be joined by members of the WICKED company for a post-performance talk-back to discuss what can be done to help stop the prevalence of bullying.

Tune in to PBS on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at 8 p.m.* for Live From Lincoln Center's telecast of the New York Philharmonic's Opening Gala conducted by Music Director Alan Gilbert. The program will feature world famous violinist Itzhak Perlman performing personal favorites including Williams' Theme from Schindler's List and Massenet's "Meditation from Tha?s, as well as works by Sarasate, Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. Happy Birthday, Harry Connick, Jr. A star in music, theater, film and television, Connick recently won his second Emmy for musical direction of his live concert television special, 'Harry Connick Jr. in Concert on Broadway.' In 1990 he appeared in a sold-out concert series at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and in 2006, received a Tony nomination for his performance in the Broadway revival of The Pajama Game. He most recently starred on Broadway in the musical On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.

Newsies, the Tony® Award winning new American musical, proudly welcomes Lavon Fisher-Wilson to the role of Medda Larkin beginning tonight. She succeeds Capathia Jenkins, who played her final performance on Sunday, September 9.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, stage and screen star Cynthia Nixon has signed on to play Emily Dickinson in an upcoming biopic helmed by Terrence Davies. Davies told THR: 'I wrote the screenplay with Cynthia in mind. It was the kind of dream casting you hope for. I never, for a moment, imagined my wishes would materialize. Cynthia has such a strong feeling for the work -- and now she is our Emily Dickinson. I'm over the moon.'

Five days after closing on Broadway, the late Gore Vidal's political drama The Best Man lands on the Heritage Center stage in Morrisville for a September 14 - October 7 run. The Actors' NET of Bucks County launches its 17th season with co-founder Joe Doyle directing Vidal's tale of back-biting and blackmail at a fictitious 1960 political Convention in Philadelphia.

The Hampton Theatre Company in Quogue is all set to begin its 28th season, with four tremendously engaging and entertaining plays on the schedule from October through June 2013.

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson is a sharp-witted musical comedy about the life of America's original political maverick that reimagines and reinvents the life of President Andrew Jackson, and sets it to an infectious emo rock score. In keeping with the mission of ArtsWest, it's a fiercely compelling event that will surely inspire conversation. It's a blast from the past that parallels today's political climate, depicting the birth of Democracy soaked in Emocracy and testosterone. The show reveals our nation's growing pains, and those of Jackson himself. He was unexpectedly famous, and thrust into leading a country. He is sometimes called the American Hitler. He asked for forgiveness rather than permission for what he did.

This past summer, at Lamb's Players Advanced Musical Theatre Camp, under the direction of Associate Artistic Director, Kerry Meads, students were challenged to write the lyrics for an original song about the effects of texting and social media on their relationships. They worked together as an ensemble, along with Lamb's Associate Artists, and brainstormed about their thoughts and feelings. Phrases flew out about their frustration with 'faceless conversation' and 'why can't we unplug and give a hug' or 'Why do you only want to talk to me across a broadband?' They expressed a longing for connection and community that they felt was epitomized by last year's blackout in San Diego on September 8. Jon Lorenz, co-creator of 'Mixtape', compiled their free flow of ideas into a song called 'Blackout Day'.

Spotted over the weekend enjoying the hilarious and eccentric antics of the ABSINTHE cast was Beth Riesgraf, the beautiful star of TNT's drama series, Leverage. Vassar's Mathematics Department in cooperation with the Drama Department presents one performance only of the award-winning hit solo show, Truth Values. One Girl's Romp Through M.I.T.'s Male Math Maze, on Friday, September 14, at 7:00pm in the Martel Theater of the Vogelstein Center for Drama and Film. Free and open to the public, Truth Values, a project of Unexpected Theater, is written and performed by Gioia De Cari and directed by Miriam Eusebio.
