The New York Philharmonic has announced several additions to the cast of its production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel, February 27-March 2, 2013: Shuler Hensley will portray Jigger Craigin, Jason Danieley will portray Enoch Snow (replacing the previously announced Alexander Gemignani, who has withdrawn due to scheduling conflicts), Jessie Mueller will portray Carrie Pipperidge, Kate Burton will portray Mrs. Mullin, and John Cullum will portray Starkeeper/Dr. Seldon. As previously announced, Carousel will star Kelli O'Hara as Julie Jordan, Nathan Gunn as Billy Bigelow, and Stephanie Blythe as Nettie Fowler. The production will be directed by John Rando, conducted by Rob Fisher, and choreographed by Warren Carlyle. The production's cast and creative team have earned a combined total of 16 Tony Awards and 32 Tony nominations.

Producers Joey Parnes, Larry Hirschhorn, and John O'Boyle announced today that Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is headed to Broadway on the heels of its sold-out premiere at Lincoln Center. The 17-week strictly limited engagement is set to begin performances on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Broadway's Golden Theatre. Directed by Nicholas Martin, the Broadway production will feature the entire original company, which includes Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant, and Billy Magnussen. Opening night is set for Thursday, March 14, 2013.

The Human Rights Campaign - the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization - will host its annual Greater New York Gala dinner on February 2, 2013 at the Waldorf Astoria. This year's event comes on the heels of historic electoral wins for marriage equality across the country.

According to the New York Times, the Trustees of The Laurents/Hatcher Foundation, Inc. have announced that "A Kid Like Jake" has been selected for the 2013 LAURENTS / HATCHER FOUNDATION AWARD. The foundation will provide a $50,000 cash award to playwright Daniel Pearleand a grant of $100,000 to go directly towards the production costs of the play's premiere at LCT3 in June.

Today in 1966, Sweet Charity opened at the Palace Theatre, where it ran for 608 performances. Featuring music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, the musical was directed and choreographed for Broadway by Bob Fosse starring his wife and muse Gwen Verdon. It is based on Federico Fellini's screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions.

In 1988, Chilean military dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years.
