Between The Lines - The James Joyce/Groucho Marx Letters is presented by Bloomsday in Melbourne, now in their 32nd year of celebrating the annual commemoration of Irish writer James Joyce. Written by Steve Carey and directed by Renee Palmer, the play follows a young scholar in 1987 who discovers letters exchanged between James Joyce and comedy legend Groucho Marx, only to have her groundbreaking find hijacked by the mentor she trusted to protect it. Tref Gare stars as James Joyce and Scott Middleton as Groucho Marx, with the cast also including Seon Williams, Christina Costigan, and Shannon Woollard. The production explores attitudes toward women across decades, set against a backdrop of academic politics and the excess of the 1980s.
