BWW Review: GREAT EXPECTATIONS Delivers Great Charm
by Frank Benge - December 01, 2018
GREAT EXPECTATIONS is Charles Dickens' thirteenth novel and depicts the personal growth and development of an orphan nicknamed Pip. It is Dickens's second novel, after David Copperfield, to be fully narrated in the first person. The novel was first published as a serial in Dickens's weekly periodical All the Year Round, from 1 December 1860 to August 1861. In October 1861, Chapman and Hall published the novel in three volumes. It has been adapted into a multitude of films, television programs and stage productions. The adaptation by Barbara Field is currently on stage at The Vortex as produced by Different Stages.
BWW Review: LOVE NEVER DIES at Broadway In Austin
by Jesse Griffith - November 30, 2018
I was only vaguely aware of the plot of this sequel to the Phantom of the Opera and was a bit surprised to find no synopsis in the program. However, no synopsis was needed to follow the plot and I prefer not to know too much (or to reveal spoilers). All I knew was that some time has passed since the last story (10 years), Christine and Raoul venture to America to further her career and that the Phantom has something to do with how it all transpired.
Street Corner Arts Presents WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE HERERO OF NAMIBIA...
by BWW News Desk - November 30, 2018
Street Corner Arts bring you WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT A PRESENTATION ABOUT THE HERERO OF NAMIBIA, FORMERLY KNOWN AS SOUTHWEST AFRICA, FROM THE GERMAN SUDWESTAFRIKA, BETWEEN THE YEARS 1884-1915 by Jackie Sibblies Drury playing at Hyde Park Theatre from November 30 thru December 15. Ms. Drury's stunning, self-referential theatrical collage tackles the subject of racism and the theatre community's own (sometime self-serving) attempts at engaging with this subject matter. To helm this ambitious show, SCA has brought back Liz Fisher, director of SCA's 2016 production of CONSTELLATIONS and recent recipient of the prestigious 2018 Princess Grace Award in Theatre.
BWW Review - ZACH's A CHRISTMAS CAROL Cures The Scrooge in All of Us
by Joni Lorraine - November 29, 2018
Over 100 new people move to Austin every day. And before you wonder why I've started a theatre review with that statistic, it means 36,500 new Austinites have not seen ZACH's A CHRISTMAS CAROL. This perennial favorite, running at ZACH every Christmas season for the last three million years (Okay, really, what is it now, four years?) adds much merriment to the Austin holiday season, and Austin theatre in general. It showcases the best of our community, and is top notch entertainment for those looking to bask in the joy of the holiday season. It's a perfect show to share with the family in town for the holiday - and a great representation of Austin's talent for the newcomer.

BWW Review: A MERCHANT OF VENICE Undersells Shakespeare's Comedy in Austin, TX.
by Amy Tarver - November 27, 2018
Tackling the roles in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, proved to be no easy task for the students at The University of Texas. The heart of the show is a story of prejudice, social standing and ultimately redemption. A young Venetian, Bassanio needs money desperately to woo wealthy heiress Portia into marriage. Asking his friend Antonio for the funds, Antonio in turn borrows money from a local Jewish lender named Shylock. Apart of their contract (with a bit of dark humor), the loan must be repaid in three months or Shylock may exact a pound of flesh from Antonio. Spoilers, he doesn't repay the loan in time and chaos ensues between Shylock and our gentlemen. With many suitors vying for Portia's attention, a tricky quest of caskets is the obstacle to her hand. Other characters intertwine themselves in marriage on both sides of the prejudice further complicating Shylock's relationship with her daughter, escalating her desperation and feelings of betrayal. Adding a modern interpretation to Bassanio and Antonio's friendship into lovers and elevating Portia to reality star status - UT put forth a one of a kind exposition of this classic story.

BWW Review: A LION IN WINTER - Wimberley Disappoints With Passionless Plantagenets
by Lynn Beaver - November 23, 2018
James Goldman's bitingly witty play A LION IN WINTER has been a favorite of mine most of my life. Written in 1966, this show has everything in my opinion; warring family, a larger than life king, a queen who is, arguably, the most famous woman in history, grasping, greedy princes, all wrapped up in a real life, high stakes game of thrones. The biggest plus is some of the best dialogue ever written for the stage, and roles that are on every actor's bucket list. As a devotee of medieval history, A LION IN WINTER, is quite simply my cup of tea. The legendary Plantagenet family known as the 'Devil's Brood' on stage at the same time? It doesn't get better. Unfortunately The Wimberley Players production is sadly lacking in the passion that runs through the veins of Goldman's work like life's blood.
BWW Review: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at Austin Shakespeare
by Jesse Griffith - November 22, 2018
Within the gorgeous Rollins Theatre in a 1950s plantation-bedroom set we are transported into the mind's eye of the genius that is Tennessee Williams. All of the supporting elements are here - an elaborate but not overbearing set, great lighting, sound, and props, beautiful costumes, wigs and make-up, nothing omitted, nothing overlooked.
BWW Review: POTTED POTTER Quickly Swoops into The Paramount Theatre in Austin, Tx
by Amy Tarver - November 19, 2018
Filing into the Paramount for POTTED POTTER, the passion and love for the wizarding world buzzed in the air. Proud members of Gryffindor and Slytherin alike, adorned themselves with scarves, robes and faintly drawn scars, showcasing their Potter items with pride. If there is any place to let your Potter flag fly, it's at POTTED POTTER this weekend. At the helm of this show are two very energetic and larger than life actors Scott Hoatson and Brendan Murphy. Their larger than life characters and interactions take on the task of compressing the entire Harry Potter series into 70 minutes. Having named the show, POTTED POTTER: An Unauthorized Harry Experience, the audience is prepared for the farce that is about to explode onstage. Travelling book by book, these kooky actors take on all the major plot points and the major characters within Rowling's magical world.

BWW Review: CABARET Dazzles at Texas State
by Frank Benge - November 17, 2018
CABARET is a 1966 musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which was adapted from the short novel Goodbye to Berlin (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on the nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub, and revolves around young American writer Cliff Bradshaw (John Fredrickson) and his relationship with English cabaret performer Sally Bowles (Logan-Rae). The musical was also made into a 1972 film.
BWW Review: MEN ON BOATS at Mary Moody Northen is Must-See Theatre
by Lacey Cannon Gonzales - November 15, 2018
MEN ON BOATS is hands down, must-see theatre! This production accomplishes what all plays aspire to, but few achieve - all-around excellence. The crew's journey, described by Sides as 'an apt metaphor for the peril faced by many in our society on a daily basis, ' is fraught with important meaning while still maintaining levity and fun. This 'rollicking' sometimes vulnerable show reminds its audience to find adventure in their own lives. After all, we only get one.
BWW Review: Austin Opera Festively Reimagines Verdi's OTELLO in Austin, TX
by Amy Tarver - November 14, 2018
Continuing Austin Opera's relationship with Italian Operas, Giuseppe Verdi's OTELLO opened at The Long Center last Saturday. To a packed house and a full stage, Verdi's adapted story of Shakespeare's classic tragedy OTHELLO, struck a chord with the audience. Moving from the familiar OTHELLO, Verdi transformed this classic story into a true Italian operatic experience. Pulling inspiration from catholicism - the division of good vs. evil is ever more dramatic in the operatic telling of this betrayal. With OTELLO's clear religious thematic exploration, Shakespeare's original story is more expanded on rather than altered. For audience members unfamiliar with the story of OTELLO, the key plot driving intentions of our characters is simple. Unlucky and pure Desdemona falls victim to power hungry and manipulative Iago's plot to convince Othello of Desdemona's unfaithfulness. With envy driving Otello, he is overcome by jealousy and thus acts out on his anger, altering the fate of many players upon the stage.
BWW Review: DOUBT: A Parable at City Theatre Austin
by Jesse Griffith - November 13, 2018
It has been said many times that the difference between an adequate play and a truly great play is that great plays force one to think. They stay with you, you are compelled to discuss them with your play-going companions, you reflect upon them. While DOUBT: A Parable certainly made this reviewer think - a day later and struggling to adequately review it, it continues to haunt me.

Photo Flash: The City Theatre Austin Presents DOUBT - A PARABLE
by BWW News Desk - November 09, 2018
DOUBT: A PARABLE. John Patrick Shanley's Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning drama brings a gripping storm of suspicion and scandal where no simple truths or answers exist. Set against the backdrop of 1960s America, a turbulent time of political and social change, a progressive young priest's conduct at a Bronx Catholic school comes under question by one of the Sisters, whose beliefs are deeply rooted in a stern and unquestionable tradition.
