Frederick Douglass! The Lion Of Freedom! is a show that explores the question “What is freedom?” In this performance Darius Wallace journeys through Frederick Douglass’s life from the time he grew up as a slave on the plantation, until the moment he becomes free. Frederick Douglass’s freedom began with learning how to read. He was fascinated with the power of the written and spoken word. Yet in the 21st century in more ways than one Darius exposes the lack of freedom and the continuing perpetuation of slavery mentality, emotionally, physically and religiously. In this interactive show family audiences will witness Darius Wallace transform into several different characters of influence on Douglass’s life through song, speeches, monologues and spoken word poetry. Darius’s hope is that audiences will be inspired by Frederick Douglass’s ability to overcome adversity through the power and inspiration of the written and spoken word. With this power we can not only transform ourselves but also the world around us. With this power we will be enlightened to know, that true freedom, is an inside job.
