Trinity Laban Celebrates Thea Musgrave's 90th Birthday With A CHRISTMAS CAROL

London's Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance stage a new production of Thea Musgrave's 1979 opera A Christmas Carol as part of their new season focus Venus Blazing.

A Christmas Carol closely follows Charles Dickens' beloved novel and will be given its second ever UK performance by the opera and vocal students of the conservatoire.

Legendary Scottish-American composer Thea Musgrave (b. in 1928) has a career spanning 70 years and continues to maintain an active composing schedule. Trinity Laban celebrated her 90th birthday this year as part of Venus Blazing, a ground-breaking initiative to abolish the traditional all-male composer concert programme that is the norm from the 2018/19 academic year, an essential initiative considering recent statistics revealed that only 2% of classical music programmes feature works written by women.

Venus Blazing is Trinity Laban's pledge to ensure that in all the multitude of concerts and events its Faculty of Music stages in the 2018/19 academic year at least 50% will be music by women in the fields of classical music, opera and jazz. Aiming to challenge the status quo of gender bias and exclusion of women from the art form and ensure that it does not continue into the next generation of music makers, Venus Blazing shines a light on a lot of music that would otherwise be side-lined.
